LPL Play Gets Underway [17 Dec]

Tuesday, 17 December 2013
Sometimes it's worth staying for the overtime .

The LPL Soccer season started with a bang - a girls double-header at Huyck and a boys double-header at Cabrillo Field. Also up on the hill, the Cabrillo girls hoopsters hosted the Santa Ynez Pirates to tip-off the LPL cage season.

[Half 1-0 Cabrillo]

If you weren't there you missed a well-played dandy. The Conqs took a 1-0 first half lead, and the Braves answered with two quality goals in the 2nd, but the story of this one was the extremely high caliber of goal-tending by both Cabrillo's Rikki Patel and Lompoc's Audrey Ogden.

Cabrillo took an early lead 15 minutes in when Heidi Cortez was whistled for a foul in the box and Sydney Townes pounded home the resulting penalty kick.

The Braves stepped it up in the second half, with most of the action taking place in the Conqs end of the field, but Cabrillo had several counter-attacks that had Lompoc supporters in near apoplexy.

Patel, who was under duress much of the game, had some brilliant saves. She stopped a penalty kick with about 14 minutes left, and it wasn't her best of the night.

That would likely be the one following a turnover and a quick pass to the other side of the pitch. She was at a full sprint running across the box, saw the ball curving behind her, reached back at the corner of the net and dug the ball out of the air. It bounced about 2 feet from the near post, and she managed to reverse direction and dive on it just ahead of 3 Lompoc attackers.

Audrey Ogden was just as good, and perhaps just a bit luckier. She had a pair of terrific point-blank stops. And then, on a Cabrillo counter, a Lompoc defender missed on a tackle, allowing a free 30 yard run towards the goal directly in front of the box and behind the entire Braves defense.

Ogden came out to about 15 meters, and the attacker kicked a beautiful lob that an entire stadium was convinced was going to go in goal. Ogden took two jab steps back, reached up at full extension and caught the bottom half of the ball. Most folks believed there would be a rebound, but she held it.

Those stops occurred about 3 minutes apart in the last 5 minutes of the game. Yeah, it was like that.

Lompoc's goals also came about 3 minutes apart. With almost 8 minutes erased from the 40 minute 2nd half clock, 'Jandra' Martinez was finally able to corral a ball that had half a dozen touches inside the box on a centering pass by Evelyn Acosta. She blasted it in from about 3 meters out.

The second was a rebound of a Heidi Cortez free kick from about 20 meters out and  slightly to the right side of the box. Patel had to leave her feet to get to the looping line drive but couldn't hang on to the ball and MF Denia Portillo came charging in stick it in the net.

The Braves tallied goals at the 1st & 19th minutes of the overtime session to defeat the Conqs at Cabrillo Field in the LPL season opener for both squads. Among other opportunities in the extra sessions, Cabrillo had 2 shots deflect off the crossbar. The Braves fortunes were a bit different, scoring on a nice move by Ricky Reyes and an open-goal counter by Jose 'Pollo' Cazares.

The Conqs had earned a free kick just a few meters outside the box. They pulled everyone up close to the goal, and were looking for the equalizer. The kick, however, hit a clump of players and rebounded past everyone. And Pollo, well ... (See for yourself) ..

Braves : Goal (Assist) - Ricky Reyes (83rd, Jose Cazares), Jose Cazarez (99th, None). Goalkeeping: Jose Cardenas (100 min, 10 saves).

Conqs Goal (Assist) - None (None). Goalkeeping - Lucas Derflinger (100 min, 8 saves). Kenji Moua was big up top for the Conqs, but couldn't quite get the ball inside the net.
