College Grid: Sims Pulls In Pass as Utes Blast Cards

In Louisville Friday night before 40,894 and a nationwide TV audience Utah rolled over Louisville 44-35. Even better was the sight of MATT SIMS pulling in his first pass reception of the season. Big Matt, Utah's starting tight end, pulled in the pigskin at a critical moment during the Utes' fourth scoring drive.

UU lined up at the Louisville 12-yard-line on 3rd-and-seven. They chose not to try a field goal. Instead quarterback Bradon Godfrey looked for No. 48 and Sims hung on to the ball carrying to the 2-yard-line. The Utes scored on the next play to take a 27-7 lead with 1:58 to play in the first half. Last year Sims received four passes for 62 yards but this season coach Kyle Whittingham opted to go with four wideouts and no tight end in several games early in the season.

On Saturday in University Park, Pennsylvania, LYDELL SARGEANT notched two solo tackles and one assist as Penn State stopped Iowa 27-7. The Nittany Lion defense allowed the Hawkeyes only eight first downs.

In Reno before 18,500 disappointed fans the Nevada Wolfpack fell to Fresno State 49-41. Nevada running back VAI TAUA, despite making the starting lineup the week before, did not play.

In Crookston, Minnesota, the Upper Iowa Peacocks messed up the Minnesota-Crookston Homecoming with their first Northern Sun Conference victory of the season 50-21. Defensive end MIKE SLAUGHTER came off the bench to make two behind-the-line tackles, one a seven-yard sack of the UMC quarterback, and another a three-yard loss. Tackle JUSTICE CLEGG, a starter just three weeks ago for UIU, did not play for the second straight week.

At Florence, Alabama before 7235 football fans starting cornerback DONALD WHITE made two tackles and two assists but it was far from enough as No. 3-ranked North Alabama won its 17th consecutive game by steamrolling White's Ouachita Baptist Tigers 40-7. It was OBU's third straight defeat after opening the season with a historic three consecutive victories.

In JC ball BOO JACKSON's El Camino squad was idle.
