Q'S PLAY FOR PRIDE; FARLEY GETS ATTENTION

“One game at a time” is not just a sports cliché. It’s a way of life when your league record is 0-4 and only three games remain.

“All we can think about is Game Seven: Santa Maria Friday night,” said Cabrillo football coach DON CROSS Thursday morning. “We want to play well in front of our Homecoming crowd.”

Cross was asked if his team was already eliminated from the CIF playoffs. “I don’t think 3-4 will get into the playoffs,” he admitted. Even if the Conqs were to run the table in their last three games they could only finish 3-4. Last year the Los Padres League’s fourth place team, Templeton, made CIF with a 4-3 record.

Cross found plenty positive nevertheless. “There are probably 100 plays in a game. There are probably five or six that decide the game. At St. Joseph we had first-and-goal on the six, but we don’t score. Of 100 plays we’re playing well, (but) then we make a huge mistake. We need to play better in crucial situations.”

Cross noted that junior MATT ROTONDI leads the league in tackles and BENNIE GARRETT leads in rushing. Rotondi leads runnerup Daniel Segoviano of Pioneer Valley 67-61 while Garrett leads No. 2 Logan Budd of Morro Bay in yardage 697-636. “They’re very consistent. Matt had nine tackles Friday and Bennie had 100 yards and on defense played man-to-man on (St. Joseph’s star receiver Scott) Cathcart and held him to three receptions.”

In Santa Maria, Cross’ squad faces a team which is 0-3 in league, 2-4 overall. The Saints have lost their three league game by 68-0, 55-0, and 44-0.

“They’re similar to us,” Cross said. “They are overmatched in size but they’re hustling right down to the end. No. 21 (Free safety Ryan Duran) comes up and hits people. Their defensive line gets off the ball. Their problem is they turn the ball over. Whoever turns over the ball least will win.” Game time at Huyck Stadium is 7:30.

Cross said Garrett, who may be limited in his appearances Friday due to a sore knee, has now received interest from Humboldt State as well as Portland State. The count of schools interested in big lineman JAKE FARLEY (listed at six-foot-three and 290 and pictured above) has reached a dozen including Fresno State, Arizona State, Utah, Nevada, San Jose State, Washington and Oregon.

Lompoc High, 0-2 in the PAC-7, will visit Arroyo Grande in a must-win game for the Braves. With a loss the Braves would probably also fall from the playoff eligible list. The game will be broadcast by Press Box Productions on Comcast Channel 23 at 7:30.
