Women's Soccer: Jani, Karissa & Katie

Freshmen KARISSA ROBERTSON (left) and JANI CARMONA (right) are two of the principal reasons the NCAA Div. II University of Hawaii at Hilo is
3-4 this season in women’s soccer instead of … well, the Vulcans won only four games all last year.

Not only that, UHH is in first place in the Pacific West Conference with a 1-0 victory.

Guess who scored the goal……. You’re right, a Lompocan. Carmona scored seven minutes into overtime after three earlier shots clanged off the posts.

“Carmona was able to pressure their defense throughout the game,” said coach Travis Clarke, just two years ago the Atascadero High girls soccer coach.

The Lompoc duo has accounted for key goals in the two previous Vulcan victories as well.

Robertson netted her first college goal two minutes into a contest against St. Martin’s of Lacey, Washington. The score gave UHH its first lead of the season and led to its first victory, by 3-1.

Three days later Robertson assisted the first goal in a 3-1 win over Central Washington. She scored the final goal as well.

A look at the UHH individual statistics for the season shows Robertson at the top of the chart. The Cabrillo High scoring sensation has put up 18 shots in seven games to lead the team. She scored twice and made two assists.

Second on the chart is Carmona who in just four games has booted 10 shots.

Prior to the season Clarke had plenty of good things to say about both Lompocans.
“Jani brings to our team an ability to beat defenders one-on-one and make plays in the midfield," the coach said.

"Karissa is very fast and strong with good technical skill," he went on. "Scoring over 100 goals in high school is unheard of especially in Southern California. Karissa will immediately help up front. Karissa is a finisher!"

Robertson was a four-time Los Padres League selection and two-time player of the year. She scored over 105 goals in her high school career and is a two-time ALL CIF selection. She played club soccer for Atletico Madrid, USA Soccer’s Coast Soccer League.

Carmona was a three-time Los Padres League selection and team MVP at Lompoc High School. She was the team's leading scorer with 21 goals last season as Lompoc won its first league championship. Also a club player for Atletico Madrid, she is a member of the Mexican National Under-20 team.

Also in first place in women’s soccer is junior KATIE McINTOSH. McIntosh has seen action in every game as the Chico State Wildcats have posted a 5-2-1 record to tie for first in the California Collegiate Association’s Northern Division. They are 7-4-1 overall. On the statistical chart McIntosh is credited with three assists. The Wildcats were champions of the CCAA North last season with a 12-2-2 record. In Lompoc McIntosh played four years of soccer at Cabrillo where she was three-time Second Team All-CIF, First Team All-League, and team MVP. The Wildcats next take the field Sunday at San Francisco State.
