Taua Scores First TD; Lydell & Lions Torched

VAI TAUA scored the first touchdown of his college career Saturday as Nevada stopped Idaho 37-21. At Reno Taua carried the rock for 11 yards and a TD with 10 seconds left to play.

The stocky fullback was confident even before his feat. “I was telling the line I was going to get the first one today,” he told the Nevada website’s reporter.

Earlier in the same series. Taua had three carries for four yards.

Saturday was a tough day at the office for LYDELL SARGEANT as No. 1-ranked Ohio State spanked Penn State 37-17. Buckeye quarterback Todd Boeckman completed 19 passes in 26 attempts for 253 yards against Sargeant and the Nittany Lion secondary. Three tosses went for touchdowns.

Sargeant was asked about it after the game by CSTV.com
Q: What are your emotions right now?
A: This is a tough loss. There were a lot of emotions going into this game and a lot of emotions during the breaks. They played very well offensively and took advantage of a couple of things that we did. But we will be back.
Q: Did Todd Boeckman surprise you at all?
A: They pretty much ran everything that we did not see. They did not run anything we were used to or saw in tape. We adjusted to things in the second half, but they ran plays that we could not pick up on. He played well. They scored every down and did not punt at all. We did not make plays today.
Q: You usually get a lot of pressure on the quarterback and he had more time today...
A: They made adjustments on the line and with their routes. They knew what we were going to do, or at least had an idea, and they took advantage of that.

There were no other Lompocans in college action Saturday as MIKE SLAUGHTER did not play in Upper Iowa’s loss to University of Mary, and RUBEN GARCIA did not play in Iowa Wesleyan’s defeat at the hands of St. Ambrose. DONALD WHITE’s Ouachita Baptist squad had an open date, and BOO JACKSON’s El Camino College team had its game vs. Palomar cancelled due to poor air quality from fires.
