WILL THE BRAVES HIT THE BOOKS?

Due to low grades in the classroom the Lompoc Braves may be at less than full strength Friday when they open Pac-7 action opposite Righetti.

“Five guys are in trouble, four of them starters,” announced Coach ROBIN LUKEN today. He declined to identify the players and said their academic issues could be resolved by game time. “Anything is possible,” he said, but the loss of even three or four starting players could serve as yet another blow to a team whose roster has been as stable as spaghetti through its first four games due to transfer eligibility questions and injuries.

Luken added that wingback BRANDON ALONZO who injured a knee against San Marcos will not be ready for action Friday night though lineman ANDREW VAN DYKE, who also sat out the last game will return.

Luken picked quarterback DARYL AGUILAR for today’s picture seen above (by Russ Samaniego), but not without grousing “we’re trying to build a team here.”

Aguilar’s coolness under pressure in the victory over Dos Pueblos and his ability to make plays on third down qualified him for the honor, Luken said. “He didn’t turn the ball over. That’s what gives you that winning edge.” In the victory over Dos Pueblos two weeks ago the Braves began to look like the Pac-7 contender LHS fans have anticipated since summertime. The team, with its 2-2 record, was idle last Friday.

In Righetti the Braves will face a quarterback in junior Justin Level who has already surpassed 1000 yards passing. Against Dos Pueblos he personally accumulated 430 total yards with 200 passing and 130 rushing. In Tim Dwyer and Justin Rucker he has two receivers who have 200-plus yards receiving on the season. Michael Alexander is the top Warrior ball carrier with 488 yards in four games. Level has 368. Righetti’s record is 4-1 with victories over Pioneer Valley (17-14 in overtime), South Bakersfield 35-6, Tehachapi 21-19 and Dos Pueblos 35-23 last week and a loss to Santa Barbara 34-29.

Luken called Righetti “physical” which is coachspeak for blocking and tackling well. “They do the basics well but they give up a lot,” he said. “They play a risky defense—11 guys within five yards of the ball—and a wide open offense. It’ll be interesting if they want to play that kind of defense against us.” Luken was no doubt thinking of the blazing speed of Brave backs BOBBY COLLINS and MASSON BLOW among others and hoping that, maybe, the Warriors stick to their scheme.

Luken also announced a wholesale lineup change. Starting Friday night his starting defense will take the field on kickoffs. “We’ve given up too many yards,” he asserted. “No TD’s but we’ve come too close for my liking.”

Barring academic ineligibility or other changes from Wednesday to Friday the Brave lineup according to Luken will read as follows—

On defense SETH BROADHEAD and JAMES MITCHELL will be at the ends. In a change GILBERTO RIOS will move to noseguard with ADAM LEACH and SAUL DOMINGUEZ at tackles. The law firm of MOREHART & MOREHART (STEVEN & JAKE) will be the linebackers. The corners will be Collins and Aguilar, the safeties SCOTTY AGUAILAR and GILBY CORNEJO.

On offense Aguilar will direct traffic with Collins and fullback FAVI VARGAS behind him and MASSON BLOW at wing. Wideout will be RUDY YRUEGAS, tight end Steven Morehart. The O-line will see a change. BUCKY MARTINEZ will come over from defense to play center while Van Dyke will return to action at tackle. The guards will be SAHID TORRES and EVAN BEDFORD. Starting at tackle will be VAL VEGA and ALAN JULIAN.
The game will be broadcast by Press Box Productions on Comcast Channel 23 beginning at 7:30.
