LHS Girls Water Polo

By Mike Loney

The Lompoc Girls kicked off the season in fine fashion on Wednesday, defeating the visiting Righetti Warriors 4-3 in a classic defensive battle at the LAC. The Warriors opened the scoring early (5:02) in the first quarter on a goal by Allyson Fargher, but the Braves responded with two in the second period, the first one early on (6:20) by Amanda King, the second at 1:58 by Ashley Branson. Fargher tied the game at 5:11 of the third, setting up a showdown in the fourth. Lompoc jumped out to a quick lead on goals by Branson (5:47) and Brooke Crouse (4:53), surrendered a goal to Melissa Best at 2:05, and then held on to win amid a flurry of shots in the last two minutes. The Braves’ defense was bolstered by excellent play during the entire game by goalie Erica Elenes. The Varsity will be playing in the the Mistletoe Tournament (Newbury Park) Fri, 30 Nov 07 to Sat, 1 Dec 07. The JV squad did not have similar results, losing 15-6. Although the very inexperienced group played well, they were stunned by a tremendous offensive performance by the Warriors’ Shawna Best. Best had 6 goals, several assists & steals, and was clearly the best player in the pool. She scored four of the first five goals of the game to give Righetti a lead which they never lost. Lompoc received goals from team captain Anna Clark (4), Stephanie Cardoza (1), and Sabrina Scheffler (1). The JV will be playing in the Cabrillo Frosh/Soph Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1 2007.

AHC Baseball

Tuesday the Hancock Bulldog World Series inter-squad baseball tournament began with a 6-4 Gold victory. The Gold scored the first run of the game in the first with an RBI single by COREY DOTZLER. Dotzler had another run batted in the third. On Wednesday the Blues evened the series with a 5-1 victory. Losing pitcher was KIRK FRIDRICH whose control was uncharacteristically shaky.

Football Notes

LYDELL SARGEANT's Penn State Nittany Lions have accepted a berth in Dec. 29's Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. Their opponent is expected to be Texas Tech or Texas A&M.
BOO JACKSON did indeed lead the state community colleges in several key quarterback categories this fall at El Camino.
In passing yardage/attempt he posted a 10.7-yard average. That shows he as not just dumping off short range passes. Second best was Ben Cozad of College of the Siskiyous.
Boo’s pass rating was 189.5 far above Cozad who was second at 171.1. Cozad did nip Boo in total offense/play which seems to indicate he ran more effectively. But the difference was tiny—9.3 yards to 9.0 yards.
