Hain Holds Onto Lead

With just 24 hours remaining before the ballot window closes WES HAIN maintains his 29-vote margin Saturday in Lompoc Locker Room’s “Peoples Choice” Athlete of the Year Award balloting.

Hain, Cabrillo High’s all-time scoring leader, holds 48 votes, while CHS girl golfer KELLIE GEORGE has received 19, Detroit Tigers signee CHRIS WHITE 17, and Kansas City Royals pitching prospect DANNY DUFFY 15.

The margin of 29 votes between Hain and George remained the same as Friday night as both nominees received four votes Saturday. White was the day’s favorite as he picked up 11 votes and overtook Duffy for third place overall.

The Peoples Choice results differ substantially from those returned by a select panel of sportswriters, broadcasters, and officials a week ago. Lompoc Locker Room's Select Panel picked Duffy as Male Athlete of the Year with Hain finishing third behind quarterback BOO JACKSON. White came in eighth, tied with Penn State cornerback LYDELL SARGEANT.

Voting continued slow for Coach of the Year and Team of the Year. For coach, boxing trainer ROY BACA maintained a one-vote lead 5-4 over CHS girls water polo coach COREY McINTYRE with two others at one vote apiece.

A paltry three votes give the CIF champion Cabrillo girls water polo team the lead in the team category.

With Sunday night the official close of voting the four categories look like this—
Male -- Hain 48, White 17, Duffy 15, three with one apiece
Female—George 19, two with two
Coach—Baca 5, McIntyre 4, two at one

The winners will appear on “Lompoc Locker Room—the TV Show” airing New Years Eve.
