The Massive Track & Field Post-Parts 1&2

They have been holding the Santa Barbara County Track & Field Championships (usually at Carpenteria HS) for well over eighty years. Only once in that entire span had any of the female competitors thrown a shot put 42'-6" - until Lompoc's Chelsea Cassulo [above] did it again on Saturday. She tied Jenna Johnson's (St. Joseph, 2000) Meet & Stadium records as part of a series that featured numerous throws over 40 feet. She also won the Discus (119-08) and finished 8th in the 100. But, her stellar performance was not the only highlight of the meet for Lompoc valley athletes.

Part 2: Key Units to watch

Each track and field team is made up of several units - sprinters, distance, hurdlers, throwers, and jumpers. Every squad has strenths and weaknesses, but I thought it would be interesting to compare how a unit from each local school has done so far this year. [Click on thumbs to expand.]

Lompoc: The throwers are led by Chelsea Cassulo, who while competing for 3 of the 5 units, has excelled in the shot put & discus.

Girls - Shot & Discus

Boys - Shot & Discus

Cabrillo: Although the Conquistadores have a very strong overall team, the engine of the squad is the boys distance runners - many of whom also compete on the cross-country team. Among them are: Miguel Ortiz, Levi Block, Eddie Tovar, Ben Li, Oscar Torres, and Massimo Beeson.

Here are the distance split results from various meets:
