Fenske & Ur Lead Upset of Hawai’i
After being honored before the game on Senior Day HEATHER FENSKE (left) and BECCA UR (right) made it a day to remember in spades Tuesday in San Diego.
With five assists from Ur and stellar play from Fenske in goal San Diego State knocked off the No. 4 ranked Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii 10-7. SDSU, despite its 25-3 record SDSU had been ranked No. 5.
As the Hawaiians fall to 7-3 and fifth place in conference behind fourth place SDSU's 7-2 they can blame Ur and Fenske. It was Hawaii's first loss to SDSU in their last six matches.
Ur sparked the Aztec offense with her assists, five being her season high, while Fenske had a huge game. She blocked a pair of penalty shots and racked up 11 total stops, marking her 12th double-digit save game of the season and fifth in the Aztecs' last six outings.
Three of Ur’s assists came in the first quarter. Ur found Aztec high-scorer Jenna Schuster on a cross-court pass two minutes into the game to open the scoring. The pair connected again just 1:37 later as the Aztecs capitalized on a man-up opportunity. UH was able to get on the board at the 3:34 mark when Saara Majuri's offspeed shot found its way past an outstretched Fenske, but the Aztecs regained their two-goal lead (3-1) when Ur set up Ronni Gautschi with 57 seconds on the clock.
Ur is a two-time co-captain rounding out an illustrious four-year career. She currently ranks second in the Aztec record book with 222 ejections drawn, and is tied for ninth with 58 career assists. This season she has dished out a team-leading 34 helpers, while racking up 16 goals and 31 steals. Ur has seen just as much success in the classroom earning all-academic honors in each of her three years. She will be graduating with a degree in biology and has plans to attend medical school.
Fenske has established personal bests in every category this season. In her first year as a starter she has amassed 234 stops in 26 games. Her 9.00 saves per game average ranks fourth in the Mountain Pacific conference and seventh in the nation. She has notched 11 double-digit save games, including a career-high 16 blocks vs. Cal State Bakersfield on March 16. She also came up big in conference wins over Long Beach State and California with 13 and 14 stops, respectively. A scholar-athlete, Fenske will graduate with a degree in business management.
The Aztecs face the supreme challenge when they visit No. 1 UCLA on Saturday. UCLA is 24-0 on the season and 10-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. San Diego trails UCLA, Stanford (8-1) and USC (8-2) in the standings. The Aztecs travel to Cal State Northridge (1-8) on Sunday.
