Santa Ynez @ Cabrillo
The Pirates (9-3, 6-1 LPL) took another step forward in their quest for an LPL title by topping the Conq's 16-2 at CHS on Tuesday. Santa Ynez holds the tie-breakers over St Joes and just needs to win out. That, however, is no easy task in the Los Padres. The pirates swept at #1 & #2 singles (Juan Ferrer, Evan Ineman) without loosing a game. Their #1 Doubles unit (Curtis Cole, Miles Seemann) also swept (6-3, 6-0, 6-0). Cabrillo's points were scored by Eric Wang (#2 Singles) and the #3 Doubles combo of Jose Flores and Tanner Stark.

JV @ Santa Ynez
On the road the juniors fared somewhat better dropping the match 7-11 after getting some wins versus third round substitutions. Ray Marino (6-0) and Alex Hibbs (6-4) both scored in singles action, while the Conq's picked up five points in doubles. Three of those were from Dave Terrones /Jeff Rodriguez who swept 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. Calvin Hoffeld / Alex Hurd picked up one set 6-2, and the "Rickies" - Cummings & Ruiz took a point 6-0.

Baseball

The old canard in diamond circles is that you win with pitching and defense -that you can also lose in their absence was amply demonstrated on Tuesday.

Lompoc (8-11, 4-2 LPL) @ Santa Ynez (11-7, 4-2).[Story]

The Pirates continued the defense of their own field on Tuesday, posting a 6-0 mark at home this season, with their 6-5 win over the Braves. Lompoc pitcher Cody Berryman, in a complete game, gave up 5 hits and a walk - but the defense deserted him and 3 of the 6 runs he surenderred were unearned. On offense, Chris Mallory went 3-4 and scored two runs.

JV [8-6] vs Santa Ynez @ Bodary Field
Lompoc lost 8-6 after having fought back to take a short-lived lead. The Brave pitchers Nick Taitigue (4 inngs) & Adam Card (2 Inngs.) gave out 8 free passes and surrendered a few hits, but the Braves were killed by errors.

Drew Sapp had a 2-4 day with a double, Hernandez an RBI Double, and Daniel Dunaetz was 2-2 with a sacrifice.

Cabrillo
Varsity Cabrillo (8-11, 3-3 LPL) @ Ventura (8-12, 2-4 Chnl Lg)
Cabrillo pitchers Aaron Naputi & Tyson Ramsden had trouble finding the plate - issuing 10 walks, and hitting a batter while also giving up 3 hits and four earned runs. Justin Boggs, brought in to close, had one of the Conq's two strikeouts, and no walks - but he gave up two more runs on three hits as Cabrillo dropped a 6-0 decision to Ventura. The Cougars got a run each in the 3rd & 4th innings, and two each in the 5th & 6th. Cabrillo after winning four in a row has now lost three straight.
JV [11-5-1] vs Ventura @ Corey M. McIntyre Field
The Conquistador's ran away with this one, pounding out 16 hits enroute to a 9-2 victory. Chuck Meraz & Derek Buttler each had three hits, and four other players had two. Sean Greathead went the distance on the mound, scattering 5 hits, and allowing two earned runs. He struck out nine and gave up a couple of walks. Cabrillo apparently did not committ an error.

Lompoc @ Santa Ynez
It was a close game - emphasis on was. There was no score until Lompoc pushed across two runs in the fourth, and then `boom' - eight runs in the fifth for a 10-0 lead and suddenly the ballgame was over. With the exception of one pinch hitter every player safely reached base. They outhit the Pirates 7 to 1, picked up five walks, and were on the receiving end of 4 errors while committing none themselves. Dana Campitelli tripled, Courney Dosa & Paty Martinez doubled, and Leanna Corral scored two runs and drove in two others.
Jeana Carrillo continues to roll. She pitched her third consecutive complete game shutout, moving her scoreless innings streak to twenty. It has now been five games since she gave up an earned run. Since the 5-0 loss to a very good Buena squad (only two earned runs) she has given up one run (unearned), while defeating Santa Maria, Morro Bay, Templeton, Cabrillo, and Santa Ynez. She doesn't have overpowering speed, and usually doesn't have huge numbers of strike-outs. She hasn't been unhitable like some pitchers so how does she do it - she PITCHES. In, out, up, down, change speeds, and throw strikes has induced a lot of groundouts, etc. . She reminds me of a guy twenty-some years ago of whom it was said " He ain't got nothin' - we just can't hit 'em".
