Football Playoffs

CIF Football
The 8-man playoffs started last weekend and the 11-man team selection and brackets were announced today. Below are the brackets for the local 11-man leagues & the 8-man results so far.

11-Man Playoffs (LPL/Pac-7)
Division X (Northwest) [Los Padres League]
This division consists of 25 teams in 4 leagues - 16 teams made the playoffs.
The breakdown is as follows: Los Padres - 4, Tri-Valley -3, Del Rey- 4, Pioneer- 3, At-large - 2 (Pioneer, Tri-Valley).

Northwest Div (X) Bracket
#1 Nordhoff [Ojai] 10-0 (4-0) (Tri-Valley #1) hosts #16 Verbum Dei 5-5 (3-3) (Del Rey #4)
#8 North Torrance 7-3 (4-1) (Pioneer #2) hosts #9 Santa Ynez 5-5 (4-2) (Los Padres #3)
#5 Lompoc 7-3 (5-1) (Los Padres #1) hosts #12 El Segundo 6-4 (2-3) (Pioneer #4/AL)
#4 Cantwell-Sacred Heart 9-1 (5-1) (Del Rey #2) hosts #13 Carpinteria 7-3 (2-2) (Tri-Valley #2)

#3 Bishop Montgomery 8-2 (6-0) (DelRey #1) hosts #14 Templeton 6-4 (4-2) (Los Padres #4)
#6 Oak Park 6-4 (2-2) (Tri-Valley #2) hosts #11 Centennial [Compton] 5-5 (3-2) (Pioneer #3)
#7 Morro Bay 5-5 (4-2) (Los Padres #2) hosts #10 Mary Star of the Sea 4-6 (4-2) (Del Rey #3)
#2 South Torrance 9-1 (5-0) (Pioneer #1) hosts #15 Santa Paula 5-5 (1-3) (Tri-Valley #4/AL)

Not Selected:
Los Padres - Cabrillo 4-6 (3-3), Santa Maria 3-7 (1-5), Nipomo 0-10 (0-6) Tri-Valley - Fillmore 7-3 (2-2) Del Rey - Bosco Tech 6-4 (3-3), St. Bernard 3-7 (1-5), Lasalle 0-10 (0-6). Pioneer - Torrance 2-7-1 (1-4), Lawndale 2-8 (0-5).

Comments:
1. The two teams with winning records that were left out did it to themselves in the last week of the season. Fillmore lost to Santa Paula & Bosco Tech fell to Mary Star of the Sea, who in both cases took those respective slots.
2. Lompoc drew a very tough 1st-rounder. The El Segundo Eagles were ranked #1/#2 in the division for a portion of the season. The looked to contend for the Pioneer League title, before dropping their last 3 games - to North Torrance (14-10), Centennial (17-10), and league champs South Torrance (38-3). Their other loss was to a good Oak Park squad (29-21).
3. Lompoc also has the possibility of a great 2nd round match-up. If (when ?) they get past El Segundo, they could face Carpinteria, provided the Warriors can knock off a very good Cantwell-Sacred Heart team.
4. Morro Bay has a very winnable game, although MSS has been coming on late in the season. Both Santa Ynez and Templeton have a shot, but they will have to play much better on the road than they have previously this year..

Division IV (Western) [Pac-7 League]
This division consists of 36 teams in 6 leagues. Each league has 2 Automatic Qualifiers & there are 4 at-large places.

Western Division (IV) Brackets
#1 Serra 10-0 (5-0), (Mission #1) hosts #16 Beverly Hills 6-4 (3-2), (Ocean #3/AL)
#8 Dos Pueblos 7-3 (4-0), (Channel #1) hosts #9 Camarillo 7-3 (4-1), (Pac View #2)
#5 Inglewood 8-2 (5-0), (Ocean #1) hosts #12 Downey 6-4 (3-2), (SGV #2)
#4 Paso Robles 8-2 (6-0), (Pac-7 #1) hosts #13 Oxnard 8-2 (4-1), (Pac View #3/AL)

#3 Chaminade 9-1 (4-1), (Mission #2) hosts #14 Culver City 6-4 (3-2), (Ocean #2)
#6 Atascadero 8-2 (4-2),(Pac-7 #2) hosts #11 Ventura 6-4 (3-1)(Channel #2)
[#7] Rio Mesa 6-4 (4-1),(Pac View #1) hosts [#10] Arroyo Grande 8-2 (4-2),(Pac-7 #3/AL)
#2 Dominguez 9-1 (5-0),(SGV #1) hosts #15 St. Francis 6-4 (3-2), (Mission #3/AL)

Not Selected:
Pac-7 -Righetti 6-4 (3-3),St. Joseph 5-5 (2-4), San Luis Obispo 4-6 (2-4), Pioneer Valley 3-7 (0-6). Channel - Buena 5-5 (2-2), Santa Barbara 2-8 (1-3), San Marcos 1-9 (0-4). Pacific View - Pacifica 4-6 (2-3), Hueneme 2-8 (1-4), Channel Islands 2-8 (0-5). Mission - St. Paul 6-4 (2-3),Cathedral 5-5 (1-4), Harvard-Westlake 2-7-1 (0-5). Ocean - Santa Monica 6-4 (3-2), Hawthorne 2-8 (1-4), Morningside 1-9 (0-5). San Gabriel Valley - Warren 4-6 (3-2), Gahr 5-5 (2-3), Paramount 5-5 (2-3), Lynwood 2-8 (0-5).

Comments:
1. I'm sure (?) it is entirely co-incidental that the 3 southern leagues (Mission, Ocean, SGV) play all their games amongst each other & so do the 3 northern leagues (Pac-7, Channel, Pacific View).
2. CIF did Paso Robles no favors, despite awarding them a #4 Seed. The Bearcats get to host #13 Seed & PacView #3 Oxnard, but the Yellowjackets were the tri-champs of the Pacific View. Their two losses were by a touchdown (35-28) to Camarillo, and to then State #1 ranked Westlake (42-14).
3. #10 Arroyo Grande received a de facto #7 Seed, drawing the least impressive of the PV tri-champs - Rio Mesa.
4. The Channel champs, Dos Pueblos, garnered very little respect for their achievement, drawing only an #8 Seed - the lowest possible. They did end up with a tough but potentially winnable game against the Camarillo Scorpions.

8-Man Playoffs
There are two local 8-man leagues - one in each division. Three squads from each league made the playoffs this year - and went 5-1 in the first round.

8-Man Division 1 [Condor League]
The Condor League has only recently sanctioned football as a league sport, but some member schools have been playing for a while. The CL only has 4 members for football, but several more in other sports (i.e. 8 in basketball). [Orcutt Academy has also talked about joining the CL.] One of those other teams, Ojai Valley, has recently started a football program, but the Spuds (Yes, the Spuds) were a Div. 1 freelance team this year, going 0-6.

2010 Condor League Standings:
Cate (Carpenteria) 8-0, 3-0
Thatcher (Ojai) 4-3, 2-1
Laguna Blanca (Santa Barbara) 5-3, 1-2
Dunn (Los Olivos) 2-6, 0-3

All but the Dunn Earwigs made the Div. 1 playoffs. The Cate Rams drew the #2 seed, while at-large selections Thatcher (Toads) & Laguna Blanca (Owls) were seeded 9th & 11th respectively.

8-Man Division 2 [Coast Valley League]
The Coast Valley League is somewhat more established in football, but also has a few teams that fade in-and-out of the scene (Coastal Chrn, etc.). Cambria's Coast Union HS is a CVL member for many sports, but, with a 17 man roster, they are currently an 11-man member of CIF- Central Section for football.

2010 Coast Valley League Standings:
Cuyama Valley (SB County) 7-2, 4-0
North County Chrn. (Atascadero) 8-1, 3-1

CIF-Central Section: Division 5
The Coast Union [Cambria] Broncos went 3-7 (2-2, 3rd of 5 in the East Sierra League). They had the 10th best record of the 15 teams in their division, but only 7 teams made the playoffs.
