Big Man Not A Surprize [14 Jan]

14 January 2014

Cabrillo has a new football coach, plus soccer and wrestling results.

Don Willis at SBCC

Football

Cabrillo AD Dan Troup did what many expected. The new Head Varsity Football Coach at Cabrillo HS is .... (drumroll, please)... Don Willis !!! The former pro and arguably the best player ever to matriculate from CHS was tabbed to fill the vacancy created by the sudden resignation of Craig Knowles last month. Troup and Willis have been seen together at several recent Cabrillo athletic events and speculation has been rampant.

Willis, who has made no secret of his desire to be a college head coach, seemed to be on his way to that goal, but returns to the HS ranks in what is likely the only position he would have taken.

Santa Ynez at Cabrillo

Santa Ynez 2, Cabrillo 1
[Halftime 1-0 Cabrillo]

Cabrillo had opportunities, but experienced the continuing frustration of not quite being able to get the ball into the net.

The Conqs did get one midway through the first, but Rob Cantrell's Pirates got the equalizer early in the second, and the game-winner late.

Kenze Spry, who assisted on the first goal, was fouled hard while hustling for a loose ball just outside the penalty area. Erin Williams resulting free kick was blocked, but Ariel Johnston scored on the rebound.

Cabrillo had several chances to tie it after that, including a corner, but could not come up with a goal.

Pirates [4-7-1, 4-0 LPL]: Goals/Assists - Riley Smith (50th, Kenze Spry); Ariel Johnston (76th, Erin Williams). Goalkeeping - Ana Reynoso (3 Saves).

Conqs [1-12-2, 1-2-1]: Goals/Assists - Pricilla Angulo (18th, Bella Sanchez). Goalkeeping - Rikky Patel (90 min, 5 Saves).

The Pirates were probably a bit better offensively the Cabrillo, but the Conqs had the stopper. After the game, numerous Santa Ynez players told their Coach, Kristen Bazzell -  "Coach, that goalie was really good."

Actually, both Cabrillo goalkeepers were, but the one being referenced was Mallory Townsend who Cindy Eisen traditionally inserts into the square in the second half similar to a baseball 'closer'.

Krista Eisen took 8 shots for Cabrillo, 7 in the 2nd half, but couldn't pierce the defense. The Pirates took a whole mess of shots with equal results.

Conqs [4-7-3, 2-1-1]: Goals/Assists - None. Goalkeeping - Brianna Gonzalez (1H, 4 'good saves'); Mallory Townsend (2H, 4 'good saves' - c. 9 total).

Lompoc at Templeton

Lompoc 2 , Templeton 2 [OT]
[Lom 1,0,0,1 - 2  Temp 0,1,1,0 - 2]

Lompoc scored 1st and scored last, but Templeton got 2 in the middle. In any event the 'not quite a win' put the Braves in sole possession of 2nd place in the LPL.

Mike Burke noted the play of Jose 'Pollo' Cazares who "created a lot of opportunities" on offense, and Joey Jacinto on defense.

In addition to Austin Alarcon, Templeton Coach Richard Sullenger especially liked the play of Taylor Burks, Garrett Watson and Clayton MacKay.
