LPL Boys Soccer

Nipomo at Cabrillo

Nipomo 2, Cabrillo 1

[Halftime 1-0 Nipomo]

Nipomo Head Coach Billy Vinnage was in no hurry to leave the field after Thursday's win. He wasn't savoring the Titans 1st LPL victory - He was recruiting. Recently named as the new Head Coach at Allen Hancock College, he was meeting with some of the Conqs about applying to play at AHC.

In the game itself there was both good news and bad news for Cabrillo. The good news was that the Conqs finally got some scoring, the bad news is that it was for Nipomo. On a corner kick, late in the game, a Cabrillo player attempted to head the ball out of the goal square, but instead sent it backwards and over his own goalie.

Asked about special efforts by players, Cabrillo Head Coach James Baca, observed that Juan Trejo "put in a lot of hard work up top to set up shots & then turned right around and was working hard on defense."

Titans [6-12-0, 1-4-0]: Goals/Assists - Brian Araujo (4th, Mike Arevalo); Credited to Efrain Navarro (75th, Cabrillo own goal on header off Navarro's corner kick). Goalkeeping - Johann Ayala (Whole Game, 2 Saves).

Conqs [4-10-4, 0-4-1]: Goals/Assists - Ezequiel Cadena (65th, Free Kick). Goalkeeping - Lucas Derflinger (Whole Game, 5 Saves - 4 1st Half).

Junior Varsity

Cabrillo 2, Nipomo 0
[Halftime 1-0 Cabrillo]

Cabrillo recorded goals in each half for the win. Cabrillo Coach Oscar Torres specifically mentioned the work in midfield/defense by Lucas Thacker and Salvadore Andrade who "played really, really well".

Due to a variety of reasons, Coach Buddy Kichler's Titan bench was thin on Thursday and he thought his team wore down a bit in the 2nd half.

Conqs []:  Goals/Assists - Oscar Hernandez (10th, Penalty Kick); Allan Velez-Ornalez (63rd, Jesus Mendiza). Goalkeeping - Riqui Cardenas (Whole Game, 2 Saves)

Titans [5-13]:  Goals/Assists - None. Goalkeeping - Umberto Ubias (Whole Game, 13 Saves).

Morro Bay at Lompoc

Lompoc 5, Morro Bay 0

[Halftime 3-0 Lompoc]

The Pirates were in the midst of a pretty solid half. The contest was a scoreless tie, and then the wheels came off. Lompoc scored 3 time in less than 3 minutes and never looked back. The win set up a 1st place match-up on Tuesday between the Braves and Santa Maria (5-0 LPL).

Lompoc Head Coach Mike Burke noted that Victor Rodriguez scored "less than a minute after he went into the game", and praised the play of Joey Jacinto defensively. While pleased with the victory, he wasn't going to let himself, or his team, get too exited about this win, reminding everyone that their next three games were against Santa Maria, Cabrillo, and Santa Ynez. They then conclude the LPL slate with 4 road games.

Andrew Wilkie, Morro Bay Head Coach, pointed out to his squad after the game that most of their problems on the day, were not the result some innate Lompoc superiority, but due to correctable breakdowns on their part. Marcelino Macias drew his attention for being the kind of player needed. He also liked what he saw from Tanner Clark, 1 of only 3 defenders available to play, and Daniel C. VanBuerden who "earned that Captain's armband he wore today".

Braves [6-1-7, 3-0-2]: Goals/Assists - Ulyses Cardona (20th,); Victor Rodriguez (21st, None);  Jose Sotelo (23rd, Ulyses Cardona);  Ricky Reyes (50th, Chris Palacios); Chris Palacios (63rd, None). Goalkeeping - Oscar Ramirez (4 Saves).

Junior Varsity

Lompoc 9, Morro Bay 0
[Halftime 4-0 Lompoc]

Asked about whether GK Michael Yang had any saves, one of the Braves staff responded - " Yeah, I think he had three, but we didn't really play much on our end of the field."  That may be the understatement of the year so far. Lompoc got 9 goals from 8 different scorers while peppering the Pirates goal with shots.
