Monday's Action [13 Jan]

13 January 2014
Lompoc Junior Jerard O'Byrne had a fine time dropping dimes on an Eagles squad that had no answer for him.

Templeton at Lompoc

Lompoc 60, Templeton 50

[Lom 5,19,18,18 - 60  Tem 12,14,13,11 - 50]

Lompoc essentially trailed the entire 1st half, finally took the lead in the 3rd, but with 5:27 left in the 4th the Braves margin was a scant 2 points (43-41). It stayed close until the final half-minute when Lompoc hit FTs to ice it.

The Braves have perimeter scoring, penetration & pass, and a powerful, if inconsistent fastbreak on their side. Templeton has inside scoring and rebounding.

So the main questions entering the night were could either squad overwhelm the other with their strength, and if not, which team had enough of the 'other' to complement their main thrust.

The answer was that the Braves, in addition to getting an amazing performance (6-7 3PT, 86%) from Jerard O'Byrne, received very good play from guards Drayton Howell & Torey Sims, and were eventually able to wear down the Eagles inside game in the second half.

Lompoc 53, Templeton 49

[Lom 12,13,17,11 - 53 Temp 20,8,8,13 - 49]

The warm-up act was also a dandy. Lompoc was without the services of frosh Ben Odom due to a neck injury, and they missed his presence in the defensive interior. Filip Krajic (wrist) is also still out, and is likely to be unavailable for some time. Jackson Wiest was out for the Titans.

Lompoc opened the game a bit like someone trying to drink out of a firehose, falling behind 5-2. They clawed their way back by scoring 6 in a row, including a Kameron Davis 3, but then went back for another sip. The primary causes of their discomfort were Zack Urcioli who had 11 in the 1st quarter with 4 more soon after and Matteo D'Alfonso who hit a trey and had several other shots with a toe on the arc. At the 7:02 mark of the 2nd, the Braves trailed 22-12.

Lompoc got a bucket, and following a defensive stop, a Darren Munez 3-pointer leading to a Templeton time-out. On the next possession Trey Bridgett stole the ball, collected a pair of rebounds, and finally got the shot to drop. Eagles up 3.

Templeton scored to increase the margin to 5, but Munez & Creighton Morales both had tallies to cut the deficit to a single point with just under two minutes remaining in the half. There was some floundering around by both squads down the stretch, and at halftime the score stood at 28-25 in favor of the Eagles.

In the 3rd Lompoc was able to clamp down on the double-headed menace, holding D'Alfonso/Urcioli to just 2 points. Bridgett continued his work on the glass, and then there was Trevon Ross.

Ross was the Braves leading scorer, but his biggest contribution may have been his hustle. There were portions of the game when it seemed like he spent more time on the floor going after loose balls than he did standing up. His ability to penetrate the defense led to many Lompoc scores even when he missed shots.

Offensively, the 2nd half turned on the emergence of Bradley Osborne. He had 11 points (3 treys) after a scoreless 1st half. Marcus Nix drilled a big 3, Rauly Yanez ended a scoring drought with 6 after the break. Ross (6) and Bridgett (2) also kept going. Lompoc needed everything they got.

The Braves took the lead 79 seconds into the 3rd, but lost it until 2:07 was left in the quarter. There was actually limited scoring (8 points) until the last 4 minutes when Lompoc went on an 11-6 run to go up by six.

They would push the differential to 7 points a minute and a half into the 4th, but the Eagles whittled away at it, helped by some not-so-smart Lompoc fouls, and with 41 ticks left in regulation Lompoc led by only 2, 51-49.

Lompoc Coach Buddy Sims called a time-out, and on the inbounds play got the ball to Ross. He was immediately fouled, sending him to the line for a 1 and 1. He nailed both shots for a 4 point advantage.

The Braves stole the Eagles inbound attempt, had several shots/rebounds before Templeton fouled again with just 0:02 left. Both FTs were missed.
