Big Night on the Mats [28 Jan]

28 January 2014

Cabrillo at Lompoc Wrestling and some Soccer - Both Boys & Girls.

LPL Wrestling

Lompoc AD Donny Cross may have made the most important decision of the LPL Wrestling season recently. At a meeting of the AD's, the 'pill' he chose to draw had the lowest number - meaning that the Lompoc Braves hold the tie-breaker should they end up in a three-way tie for the LPL Title.

The Los Padres League dual meet Champion is the only league team that advances to the CIF Division 5 Playoffs. Lompoc is now 3-1, with wins over Morro Bay, Nipomo, and Cabrillo, and a loss to Santa Ynez. Currently, the Braves next opponent, Santa Maria (4-0), sits in first place with Santa Ynez (3-1) just behind. The SY loss came at the hands of the Saints. A Lompoc victory on Tuesday at Santa Maria could force a three-way tie for first, if the Pirates also defeat Cabrillo.

If only two teams tie, the winner of the head-to head match moves on. So, basically, if Santa Maria wins, they're the Champs. If Lompoc wins, they're the Champions. The Pirates are out of it, because they cannot finish ahead of both Lompoc and Santa Maria.

It wasn't 'supposed' to be this way - as the the Santa Maria Sun put it in a  21 Jan 2014 headline - "Nipomo, Santa Ynez, and Santa Maria are the three wrestling teams to beat in the Los Padres League". The narrow Braves win over the Titans, messed up many pre-conceptions. According to one LLR confidante, as the Athletic Directors from the schools of the 'teams to beat' gathered to draw numbers, Cross intervened to point out that Lompoc had beaten Nipomo some time before. Apparently, they didn't believe him and called the Nipomo coach to confirm this astonishing story.

If the Braves can finish the tale with a win against Santa Maria, they would take their 1st league crown in quite a while. Almost makes you wonder if the ghost of Jerry Hampstad had something to do with it.

Cabrillo at Lompoc

Lompoc 54, Cabrillo 19
(at Paisola Pavilion)

As for the match on Tuesday, it was close for a while, a short while. The match started with the 170 lb weight class, which went to the Braves in a major decision. Cabrillo returned the favor at 182, tying the score at 4 all. Lompoc took the 195 bout by pin to go up 10-4, and answered with a 7-2 decision to pull within 3 points.

The next 4 bouts, however, all went to Lompoc by pin, giving the home squad a nearly insurmountable 34-7 advantage. A pin in the 2nd round at 126, kept Conq hopes alive temporarily, but the Braves recorded a pin at 132 to take a 27 point lead with only 24 points still available. Lompoc would finish with a decision, a technical fall, and fall to outscore Cabrillo 14-6 in the final 4 bouts.

Notes :

1) Cornelius Johnson picked up a win at 106. He is a great natural athlete, but likely one of the smallest kids you'll see competing at the HS level. He has bulked up this year and weighed in for this meet at 92.8 pounds.
Last year he also played football for the LHS Frosh Football team.

2) None of the Lompoc girls wrestled Tuesday night, they are looking forward to an all-girls tourney at Pioneer Valley this weekend. Several took part in a JV tourney at Dos Pueblos last weekend. And, of course, two of the Braves best female grapplers are out injured.

Cabrillo used Kim Desmarais (113) and Caroline Bodnar (120) against Lompoc boys. Both were pinned. Both teams are working towards full girls teams.

3) Lompoc moved a couple of guys from there usual spots. Chris Morales (193 lbs) got bumped down to 195 from 220, while 2-time defending LPL Champ Antonio Rangel was moved up from 132 to 138 to take on Kodey Porter in a contest of two of the better wrestlers in the area. The shifts worked out for Lompoc Coach Kyle Mayse, both won.

4) Cabrillo (Head Coach James Stalmaker), was not thrilled with the way his charges wrestled Tuesday. It wasn't their effort per se that had him frustrated, but in what he called 'the most diplomatic language that I can use', he stated that the Conqs performance was "Just not an accurate depiction of what this team is capable of doing." And continued, " I'm just sad that now we have to wait a whole year to show it to them."

The young Cabrillo squad is still trying find its way a bit, with inexperience, shifting competition weights, etc. . They are also adjusting to a new coaching staff that had to come on board in the middle of the season.

5) Coach Mayse also had some good and bad to discuss. He was delighted with the hard work Matt Hamon and Anthony Nunez have put in over the course of the season. "I'm glad they won tonight. They have really worked hard, and have gotten a lot better. I just wish I could get some of the others to work that hard." Lompoc starts 9 seniors.

The Pirates got a great 'assist' on their lone goal of the day. Unfortunately for the Braves, it came from a Lompoc defender. 17th minutes into the game, one of the Braves backs sent the ball right to Pirate Noah Blacker who promptly filed it in the net.

Neither side was really able to do much with the ball offensively. Pirate Head Coach Alex Uribe said that their game plan was to try and stifle Lompoc's Ricky Reyes and Jose 'Pollo' Cazarez. They had done damage in the first round 2-2 tie at Santa Ynez.

One change involved the deployment of a weapon that was unavailable in that game, using Brett Felipe to 'mark' Reyes. Felipe essentially played just him the entire game. When Reyes went out so did Felipe, to return when Reyes came back into play. It also seemed that whenever Reyes got the ball, the SY defense collapsed on him, forcing him to pass.

Pirates [8-4-4, 5-1-1]: Goals/Assists
Noah Blacker (17th, None). Goalkeeper - Nathaniel Beamer ('maybe 5 or 6' Saves).

Braves [7-4-6, 4-1-3]:

Junior Varsity

Santa Ynez 4, Lompoc 1
[Halftime 1-0 Lompoc]

The Braves took the early lead, but a second half substitution changed the complexion of the game according SY Coach Hector Garcia. His insertion of Luis Urena into the game changed the speed dynamic on the field and led to 4 straight Pirate goals.

Pirates [10-5-2, 5-2]: Goals - Chris Carrion, Giovanni Ramirez, Omar Rivera, Luis Urena. Assists (included) - Luis Urena. Goalkeeping - Cooper Everett ('4-5 good saves')

Braves : Goal/Assist - Rashid Hunter (Chris Vang). Goalkeeper - Michael Yang (c. 8 Saves).
