Card Game [7 Jan]

7 January 2014

Late in the game, Eric Perez dives at the edge of the box to cover a loose ball at the Saints end.

The new sports year really got underway in earnest on Tuesday, as the LPL (after a few early matches in December) kicked into gear. Lompoc soccer drew the league BYE and partly filled it with varsity contests versus Coast Union, Cabrillo took on Santa Maria. Both Wrestling squads were at home with varying results.

Boys Soccer

Santa Maria at Cabrillo

Santa Maria 1, Cabrillo 0

The Cabrillo Conquistadores hosted a match at Cabrillo Field in which neither squad lived up to their Mascot Identities. Cabrillo did not conquer and as for the Saints, well they collected a red and 5 yellow cards (including a double). Cabrillo picked up 3 canary-colored cards themselves.

"It was rough and it was ugly." in the opinion of one close observer of the game. Although some of the 9 cards issued were for verbal abuse and foul language, there was also a fair amount of physical play. The lone goal was tallied on a penalty kick 26 minutes into the second half.

Cabrillo head honcho James Baca liked the fact that his defense "took them out of their system", but was frustrated at his charges continuing lack of offense. The Conqs had some chances during the contest, but couldn't convert. "We just need to settle down and play.", Baca said.

Both coaches were apparently on the same wavelength. Saints boss Jose Navarro was proud of his group's overall effort but noted that his team needed to "Stay calm". In any event, Santa Maria takes on Santa Ynez Thursday afternoon without two of its starting midfielders in a contest with major implications in the LPL race. Cabrillo travels north to face Templeton.

Conqs : Goals - None. Assists - None. Goalkeeping - Riqui Cardenas (Whole Game, 2 Saves).

Cabrillo at Santa Maria

[Cab 0,1,0,0 - 1  SM 0,1,0,0 - 1]

The Conqs dodged a bullet, well two. With seconds remaining in the second OT period, Santa Maria was awarded a penalty kick. That shot hit the crossbar and in the resulting scramble in front of goal Cabrillo was called for another foul in the box. Another PK to the Saints, but this one did not hit the crossbar - it was stopped by replacement GK and sophomore Michaela Thomas.

The Conq girls struggled to score, but Sydney Townes continued her essential work up top, scoring for the 4th time this season and keeping Cabrillo's hopes alive. Each side recorded a goal in the 2nd half.

Wrestling

There were no separate girls matches at either location, but several did wrestle as part of the bouts that took place. Both matches exemplified the old adage "A major part of victory is showing up."

Morro Bay at Lompoc

Lompoc 54, Morro Bay 15

The Contest at 195.
The Braves won handily, but remembered perhaps their biggest loss of the season. They held a pre-match moment of silence for longtime LHS multi-sport coach and PE instructor Gerald 'Jerry' Hamstad, who passed away recently at his retirement home in Arizona. Hamstad and his friend and colleague 'Coach T' (Jerry Thompson) were instrumental in creating what many consider the Golden Age of Lompoc grappling.

Lompoc headman Kyle Mayes noted that Francisco Guzman and Anthony Nunez each stepped up a weight class and absorbed losses that deprived the Pirates of additional easy points. Austin Andrews [MB] also moved up a class creating a double-forfeit at 113, but also adding a contested bout at 120.

One of the most interesting contests on the night was at 106 pounds, where a very technically proficient Joe Morris [MB] was repeatedly stymied early in the match by the speed and flexibility of Vanessa Lopez. Although Morris was the aggressor and was in control much of the time, he miscalculated badly on two occasions resulting in the match being delayed to tend to his bloody nose.

The Pirates only wrestled 9, so the Braves collected 30 team points on walkovers. The match started at 138 pounds.
