They're Back !!! (Maybe) [23 Jan]

23 January 2014

It was Black & Blue Soccer on Thursday, with the big news being the resurrection of the Cabrillo gals this week. On Monday they were languishing in 7th place, but with two wins this week they are now in 2nd place. Granted, it is a three-way tie for the #2 spot, but to move up 6 spots in 3 days is still pretty amazing.

Although he battled leg cramps for most of the overtime Lompoc's Ricky Reyes was a constant threat thoughout the entire game.

Lompoc reclaimed 2nd place in the LPL with an OT win at Huyck Stadium over Cabrillo.

Cabrillo at Lompoc

Lompoc 2, Cabrillo 1 [OT]
[Halftime 0-0]

Lompoc controlled play for much of the 1st half, with the Conqs countering with some rapier thrusts, neither side could get the ball in the net. So, naturally, Cabrillo struck on a counter right out of the gate to start the 2nd half.

Lompoc keeper Oscar Ramirez came sliding out to the edge of the 18, but couldn't corral the ball, which was flicked at the net from the right side of the box by a charging Cabrillo player. The ball hit the left post and ricocheted into the path of Juan Trejo who hammered it into the upper left corner.

The lead didn't last long - about 90 seconds. Ricky Reyes got loose on the right side of the Conq goal, made some moves and blasted the ball past GK Lucas Derflinger, who had no chance.

The game then continued on as before as though this little scoring abberation had never existed. Cabrillo was able to control the ball much more in the 1st OT period, as if the teams traded roles at the break, but again - no goals.

The crack in the defense that finally occurred, wasn't even really a defensive mistake per se. It was an error in the transition to offense. A Cabrillo defender sent the ball back to the keeper for a goal kick, but the ball was at a somewhat odd angle. Derflinger slipped to the turf trying to get to it, and the ball trickled in to put the Braves up a goal with 4:33 left.

The Conqs mounted several valiant attacks trying to get the equalizer, and Lompoc had some opportunities to score the clincher, but once again the defenses closed the door.

Lompoc Coach Mike Burke was appreciative of what his squad had to do to get the win. "The entire team played really well. They had to, Cabrillo plays as a team, and we had to match it. That Cabrillo team doesn't just play defense with their backs or some mid-fielders, their entire team plays defense."

LPL Girls Soccer

The LPL race was turned into an absolute mess on Thursday. Five of the seven teams are now within 2 points of each other, including 3 squads tied for 2nd place with 3-3-1 LPL records. The exceptions are the extremes - Santa Ynez, who now has a commanding lead, and Santa Maria who remains a long shot for a playoff spot

It seemed liked someone was being worked on by both training staffs for most of the 2nd half and certainly during the overtime - and during the break between the two.

Lompoc at Cabrillo

Cabrillo 2, Lompoc 1 [OT] [Story]

In a heated and physical rivalry contest at Cabrillo Field, one the few things the two sides had in common was that their fans thought the refs needed their input - frequently. Another was that neither wanted to lose this game.

In the end, the result hinged on a play in the middle of the 1st OT period. Following a corner kick, Bella Sanchez came out of a scrum with the ball on the right side of the Lompoc goal, but her shot was stopped nicely by GK Audrey Ogden. The ball was behind her, however, and she couldn't come up with it cleanly as she dove for it. It trickled out to the left side where Cabrillo's Priscilla Angulo was racing unmarked into the box. Angulo beat Ogden to the ball by a few inches and stuck it in the net.

Vianney Tamayo opened the scoring for Lompoc about 3 minutes into the game, but the Conqs answered soon thereafter. Senior Janell Preble connected on her 2nd goal of the season in the 11th minute to even the score at one apiece.

While Cabrillo controlled the ball much of the 2nd half and the overtime, Lompoc had several chances to score in both OT periods, but couldn't get one to count.

Braves [5-10-1]: Goal/Assist Vianney Tamayo (3rd, Mayah Pico). Goalkeeping - Audrey Ogden (Whole Game, c. 10 Saves)

Conqs [3-13-2]: Goals - Janelle Preble (1H-11th); Priscilla Angulo (2OT-4th, Rebound of Sanchez shot).  Assists - Bella Sanchez 2. Goalkeeping - Rikki Patel (Whole Game, 8 Saves).

Junior Varsity

Cabrillo 0, Lompoc 0 [TIE

Cabrillo controlled the game much of the time, but were unable to leverage that into points. Both coaches were dealing with reduced rosters that made it difficult for them to do much in the way of substitutions.

Conq Coach Cindy Eisen liked what she saw from Alyssa Pablo and Sohmin Petit.

Lompoc Coach Mike Kimmy mentioned the midfield work of Karina Cervantes and the defense Brynn Grossini & Ali Gonzalez. He also noted that Mercedes Signorelli played the entire game despite being ill.

Conqs [5-8-4]: Goals/Assists - None. Goalkeeper - Mallory Townsend (c. 8 Saves).

Braves [2-8-3]: Goals/Assists - None. Goalkeeper - Marisol Zaragoza (c. 6 Saves).
