Girls Water Polo

Santa Maria vs Cabrillo
(at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center)

Cabrillo 15, Santa Maria 2
[Cab 9,4,2,0 - 15  SM 1,1,0,0 - 2]

When Sam Munoz hit her 2nd goal of the day at 3:34 of the 2nd period, it broke the streak. Prior to that tally, 11 different Cabrillo players had scored.

The Conquistadores came into the game with a plan to spread the ball around after the Saints varsity participated in the Cabrillo JV tournament this past weekend and had fallen to a Cabrillo JV split-squad 14-2.

It is not easy being a goalie.

Some of the Cabrillo players were, however, a bit of puzzled when they ran into something of a 'catch-22' in the 2nd half. Apparently, Conq Coach Corey McIntyre told them at halftime that they could't shoot until certain conditions had been met - no fast breaks, 3 passes after obtaining possession, and no shot without having drawn an exclusion. It was that last bit that caught the Conqs.

The Saints only had 2 bench players and by the mid 4th quarter 2 starters had fouled out of the game. With a double-digit lead and no subs available, the refs didn't swallow their whistles, but they certainly weren't inclined to call any exclusions on Santa Maria unless it was blatant. The 2nd half also progressed a tad more quickly as the clock operator was perhaps somewhat less zealous in hitting the stop button as he might have been earlier on in the game.

The Santa Maria players kept competing the entire match, taking some advantage of their limited opportunities, but the current skill and experience levels of the Conqs were clearly higher than that of the Saints, starting with basic swimming ability. The Cabrillo starters were in for about half a quarter, and mostly appeared after that just to give rest breaks to the reserves.

The only real drama was at 4:51 in the initial period when Lizbeth Hernandez scored for the Saints to cut the lead to 2-1 after a Conq turnover deep in their own zone. Cabrillo scored 4 unanswered goals in the next 1:54 and cruised to the finish. The only 2 Cabrillo players who did not score were the goalies, who both saw action in the net.

Conqs [11-6, 3-0]: Goals - Savannah Tucker (1Q 6:07); Sam Carroll (1Q, 5:51); Tori Bray (1Q, 4:39); Samantha Wulfestieg (1Q,4:06); Abby Stangl (1Q,3:32/2Q,0:49); Amanda Stanton (1Q, 2:57); Kelly Ogan (1Q,2:08); Natalie Wilkie (1Q,1:03/4Q,3:02); Lili Talkin (1Q,0:10); Sydney Ross (2Q,6:11); Sam Munoz (2Q,4:14/2Q,3:34); Marissa Davis (3Q,4:35). Goalkeeping - Demi Ames , Kinsley Edman.

Saints [1-11, 0-2]: GoalsLizbeth Hernandez, Shara Natividad. Goalkeeping - Julissa Santos, Jenae Tell.

Cabrillo 12, Santa Maria 2
[Cab 3,3,5,1 - 12  SM 0,1,0,1 - 2]

This was much like the varsity match in terms of competitive levels, but the JV girls may have been just a tad overconfident out of the gate. The Saints came out fired-up and took it to Cabrillo, resulting in a defensive stalemate for the first three minutes.

The Conqs finally broke through on a Meagan Vail goal at 2:57, Maddison Stangl followed 2 & a half minutes later to give them a little breathing room. Then, with just 7 seconds left in the period, Cabrillo drew an exclusion and Camryn Ranney cashed it in with a goal 3 seconds later.

That, and possibly some discussion with the coaches at the break, seemed to get the Conq offense untracked with Ranney scoring twice in the first 88 seconds of the 2nd quarter.

Conqs [10-2, 2-0]: Goals - Camryn Ranney 3, Meagan Stevens 2, Meagan Vail, Maddison Stangl, Gillian Marsh, Alia Carlon, Istanie Seideman, Kailey Stevens, Terri Hallberg. Goalkeeping - Rylan Scott.

Saints : Goals - Jasmine Chavez 2 (2Q, 0:27/4Q, 5:29)Goalkeeping - Leslie Zambrano.

Boys Basketball

Morro Bay at Lompoc
(Bryan Ayer Court at Paisola Pavilion, LHS)

Lompoc 68, Morro Bay 30
[Lom 16,12,15,25 - 68 MB 7,8,8,7 - 30]

Each team played without one of their big guns, for the Pirates it was 6'10" center Solomon Ruddell, for the Braves it was 3-point gunslinger Jerard O'Byrne. Both were out due to sickness. The result was that the Braves were able to control the boards much of the game, in addition to completely flummoxing the Morro Bay backcourt with their press and trap game.

The final score was a bit distorted by a Lompoc surge in the final 5-6 minutes of  the game, but the Braves were in charge throughout. The Primary reason being their defense which kept the Pirates out of double-digits in any quarter. The late surge was abetted by 2 MB players fouling out. Lompoc again had a poor night shooting, but the Pirates were worse.

Braves [10-6, 4-2]: Torey Sims 14 (2x3); Drayton Howell 12  (1x3); Gabe Simon 11 (1x3); B.J. Taylor 8, 5 rbds; Joseph Osegueda 6, 8 rbds; Darius Dunson 5 (1x3); Nate Taylor 4; Elijah Bailey 4; Glen Taylor 2; Ruben Venegas 2.

Pirates [1-19, 0-6]: Team - 3PT (4-16) FT (2-11)
Noah Agapay 10 (2x3) [0-5 FT], 5 rbds; Marjoe DeLaCruz 6 (2x3); Brandon Amato 4; Dustin Limon 4, 5 rbds [Fouled Out]; Harrison Meinke 3; Diego Rivera 2; Cru Reaber 1 [Fouled Out]; Brandon Andreas 0, 6 rbds.

Junior Varsity

Lompoc 74, Morro Bay 36
[Lom 12,30,21,11 - 74 MB 6,12,10,8 - 30]

The Braves were down a pair of players (Bradley Osborn, Filip Krajic) in this one as well, but didn't need them.

Following a relatively close 1st period (12-6) wherein the Braves scored 6 points in the last minute to break open a tie ballgame, Lompoc effectively won the game by posting a 30-12 margin in the second

With 2:37 to play in regulation, the Braves were clinging to a 37-36 lead with Morro Bay preparing to shoot the 2nd of two freethrows. Fortunately for Lompoc, it was missed, and the Braves would outscore the Pirates 8-2 in the closest game on the night.

Santa Ynez at Cabrillo

as the Santa Maria Times reported -
The Pirates play at defending LPL champion Cabrillo Friday night. Santa Ynez’s starting point guard Chase Sanchez suffered a Grade 2 concussion in the 71-55 home loss to Cabrillo on Dec. 15.

“I feel great coming into Friday’s game, Chase Sanchez went down in that game, it was an emotional deal and I think we’re going to be up for that game,” Santa Ynez coach Rod Caughell said Wednesday. “And we’re going to give them all they want and I have no doubt that we can beat the Conquistadores in their home.”
