Cabrillo JV Girls Water Polo Tournament [17-18 Jan]

Friday/Saturday, January 17-18, 2014

Meagan Vail was an absolute monster on the offensive end, well, really all over the pool, for Cabrillo Black.
[More To Come]

Girls Water Polo
Cabrillo JV Tournament
(Cabrillo hosts at the City of Lompoc Aquatic Center)

Actually, this was a combination of 2 mini-tournaments with 11 teams representing 9 schools. Cabrillo split their JV into two teams (Black/Gold) and Santa Maria had both their varsity (Red) and JV (White) participate.

The teams were divided into 3 pools, with the 5 team 'A' pool representing the tougher teams and playing a round-robin competition. The other 6 squads were divided into 'Pool B' and 'Pool C' and played the other teams in their pool on Friday and cross-pool play based on Friday's results on Saturday. The two 'tournaments' more or less alternated games during the weekend.

Stephanie Stern's AG squad went 4-0, won the division and demonstrated that 'The Streak' could last a while longer.

" Division  A"
Pool A:

Cabrillo Results

Sohyoung Petit was outstanding for Cabrillo Gold. Scoring, assists, defense, - all fueled by tremendous situational awareness.

Both Cabrillo Black and Cabrillo Gold lost their openers to PAC-7 teams, but recovered finish 3-1 and place 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Cabrillo Black
L 5-7 AG, W 14-1 SY, W 10-8 Righetti, W 14-2 SM Red.

Cabrillo Gold
L 10-0 PV, W 12-2 SM White, W 7-6 Nipomo, W 3-1 Atascadero.

Among the Cabrillo players that stood out -

C/Black [#4] Meagan Vail, was a scoring machine at times - terrorizing several defenses. She was also stout on defense.

C/Black [#3] Ellery Wilkie was, to borrow a phrase, "the straw that stirred the drink". Good things happened when she touched the ball.

C/Gold [#15] Sohyoung Petit hoisted the squad on her back and carried them. Sometimes there seemed to be 2-3 clones of her in the pool. She was all over, doing whatever the team needed.

C/Black [#1] Rylan Scott (GK) maintained her usual very high level of play.

Game Results

Special Tournament rules included -

[Cab 0,1,1,3 - 5  AG 1,3,2,1 - 7]

Cabrillo scored one in the second period to tie it, and a few real late to make it look interesting. The Eagles often simply passed the ball down-pool to an open shooter. Usually it was frosh Sarah Parson, a JV/V 'bouncer', who would end up with 6 goals in the game.

Game 10 [A2/A1]:  Cabrillo [Black] 13Santa Ynez 2
[Cab 6,2,1,4 - 13  SY 1,0,1,0 - 2]

Santa Ynez had real difficulty finishing plays throughout the tournament. This game was over quickly as Cabrillo zoomed out to a 6-1 lead. The Pirates moved the ball fairly well, but with the exception of a 1Q Kailey Holmlund tally at 3:42 to draw within a single goal, SY never threatened.

Game 12 [A2/A3]:  Cabrillo [Black] 10Righetti 8
[Cab 3,3,2,2 - 10  Rig 0,4,2,2 - 8]

This was a relatively competitive game. Cabrillo jumped on the Warriors early, but Righetti had a big 2nd period to climb back into contention. Three times they narrowed the margin to a single point (4-3,7-6, 8-7) and even tied it briefly at 4 apiece, but in each case the Conqs were able to stretch it back out.

In the 4th, Cabrillo had run the lead back to 3, before the Warriors struck with 0:28 left to make the final 10-8.

ConqsGoals - Meagan Vail 4; Maddison Stangl 3; Alia Carlon 1; Chaise Lafoon 1; Meagan Stevens 1.  Goalkeeping - Rylan Scott.

Game 13 [#3B/#2C]: Nipomo 6 Cabrillo [Gold] 7
[Nip 1,2,2,1 - 6  Cab 1,1,2,3 - 7]

This was a dandy. There were 6 ties. Neither side led by more than a point, and each one had the lead at least 3 times. Cabrillo had the stronger team, but had some defensive lapses in the last minute or so of the 3rd quarter to allow Nipomo to go from down 4-3 to up 5-4.

Game 21 [A2/A1]:  Cabrillo [Black] 14Santa Maria [Red] 2
[Cab 2,5,4,3 - 14  SM 0,0,1,1 - 2]

It wasn't that close.
