A Few Words with Kelsey Atkin
Girls Tennis
at Cabrillo HSCabrillo 17, Templeton 1
Templeton sophomore and singles #1, Lauren Shinn, was distraught at the end of the match, even though she was effectively the lone pebble of resistance to the Cabrillo flood. The Eagles managed just 1 point and 12 games in singles against the onslaught - Shinn accounting for the point, and half the games.
The story began with a sudden and dramatic 6-0 thumping of Shinn by Cabrillo senior #1 Kelsey Atkin in the first round. Shinn had reportedly only lost 7 sets in 8 LPL matches so far, and had rarely in her nascent career ever been "Bageled". In the September 18th match with Cabrillo in Templeton, Shinn had swept her three sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 to go to 11-1 on the season.
Atkin, on the other hand, while she has played well for the Conqs this season, usually providing a few points to combine with a dominant doubles squad for victory, has rarely been this good. On Monday she was unstoppable. She played calm, smart, technically proficient tennis, with a level of confidence that seemed to buoy the whole team - while sucking the life out of the Eagles. Nearly everything she tried worked, nearly everything they tried appeared to have been communicated to her telepathically first. She was, to use the phrase of my old pal, "En Fuego". She did not lose a game all afternoon.
Yeah, It was like that !
The set the Eagles did win was also a hard-fought affair. The initial game saw at least 3 deuces, and it was 4-3 after 7 games.
The Doubles were their usual excellent selves, winning 9-0 in sets (54-7 in games). Julie de Vonage swept her 3 singles sets, and the subs allowed just one game to the visitors.
