LPL Tournament # 6
at the Village Country Club [Front nine - Par-36]The Cabrillo Conquistadors finished off their LPL Championship run in fine style on Thursday - posting a double-digit win over the field at the VCC. It secured back-to-back championships for the team and their first ever solo title. Jennifer Baltimore of Morro Bay tied with Nipomo's Courtney Cuzick for Medalist Honors for the Tournament, which also secured the league's individual crown for Baltimore.
The race for LPL 1st Team positions, and automatic CIF qualification (Top 5 Spots), was a real battle. As MVP Ms. Baltimore was in, of course, as was her closest competitor - Jenny Andreas of Santa Ynez. The other spots were up for grabs. Two were nailed down on the day by the Conqs most consistent players, Karen Santamaria and Jacky McDonough. The fifth spot was decided by a playoff on the 1st hole, with Courtney Cuzick (Nipomo) nipping Cabrillo's Roselei Reddrick. Redrick did make the 1st Team, however. Gaby Baumgardner, who was 9th on the season, made the 2nd Team, along with Lompoc's Sarandon Vickery. The full list is below.
Cabrillo Head Coach Dave Schroeder welcome the assembled golfers by telling them that "We turned on the fan, because it was too hot yesterday. It's still running. Feel it?" It was a bit windy, but conditions on the course were really quite good, as both the wind and the heat were of the moderate variety. The Conqs played a nice relaxed style of golf, mostly stayed out of the trees, and posted one of their best ever scores at the VCC.
Coach Schroeder gave lots of credit his girls hard work, to the members and staff of the VCC for their support, and to his assistants - Kellie George, and Steve Moldt. The very low-key Kellie George, team founder and current assistant coach, expressed satisfaction that the squad had managed to progress to consecutive championships in just 6 years and was quite happy about the number of Cabrillo athletes on the LPL 1st Team.
There was a post tournament celebration hosted by the Conquistadors for all the players, coaches, and sundry other folks. The team enjoyed themselves, but they still have work to do. They play at Soule Park (Ojai) on Monday in the CIF Divisional Finals. After the 'party', if the team needed any reminder to keep working, all they had to do was look at their coaches. George was cleaning counters and taking pizza boxes to recycle, Moldt was supervising trash collection and disposal, and Schroeder ? Well, Schroeder was running the vacuum.

The team plays in the CIF Northern Divisional Finals on Monday at Souls Park Golf Course, and there will be a team 'sendoff' at 1pm on Sunday at Starbucks.
Gaby Baumgardner faked a pout and told folks "I was not awesome today. I was the opposite of awesome." Luckily Karen Santamaria has volunteered to step up and assume the mantle of "Awesome" for the time being.
