GVB: Cabrillo Wins Round 2

The Cabrillo Conquistadors likely wrapped up a playoff berth with a hard fought victory over the Lompoc Braves on Tuesday evening. It marked the second such win for squad this season. Meanwhile, both local tennis teams confirmed their post-season participation by winning on the road.

Lompoc Head Coach Aaron Batula had the girls try some new things against the Conqs, many of which were successful. The problem was that the Braves tended to drift back into old patterns - especially under pressure. As Batula put it - "We had chances to keep them off balance, we just didn't execute."

Cabrillo Head Coach Jim Hilliard liked the way his team "played together, with rhythm." Hilliard also liked the serving they received from Marissa Reyna and others, though he would have liked a bit more from his troops in the accuracy department. He further noted, "We passed well - Like we're supposed to.", but noticed some hiccups in the timing between setter Nikki Friend and middle blocker Lauren Pluim.

Pluim was wearing a facemask for the first time in game action. When asked about it after the match, admitted it had thrown her game off a bit. "Yeah, it did. I couldn't see down.", she stated. She will have to wear the protective guard for the remainder of the season, and have a post-season procedure performed.

Whatever was lacking in Pluim's performance, and she still had a very solid game, was counter-balanced by a tremendous effort from Brianna Farley. She had 12 kills, a hitting rate over 70%, and was clutch from the service line. She led a group of Cabrillo seniors that were really focused and intense in the final rivalry match-up of their volleyball careers.

Whatever their minor glitches, the Conquistadors put together three solid games for the win on Tuesday. And as Coach Hilliard likes to say, "When you pass well, you play well." Cabrillo passed quite well.

Braves: Chyanne Thomas 6 kills, Brittany Bolusan 3 kills, Becca Davis 6 digs, Jenna Grossini 100% attack rate, Heidi Chavez 13 assists.

Conqs: Brianna Farley 12 kills, 4 aces; Lauren Pluim 7 kills; Fallon Wynn 4 kills, 2 aces; Marissa Reyna 4 kills; Jamie Miller 4 aces. Natalie Millikan, it was noted by the staff, "passed really well in Game 1."

Lower Level Games
I keep telling folks that the JV & Frosh games are often some of the best matches of the area volleyball scene, and Tuesday night was no exception.

Technically, Cabrillo won this one in straight sets, but JV Coach Sydney Brown learned why her dad, Cabrillo Head Coach Jim Hilliard, has grey hair - coaching matches like this. Cabrillo managed to open several sizable leads in Game 1, but the Braves found a way to stay in the mix. The Conqs were up 19-11, but Lompoc battled back and cut the margin to two (22-20), before succumbing 25-21. Game 2 was a whole series of mini-runs by both sides, with Cabrillo finally prevailing 25-23. Lompoc could have won either or both games simply by curtailing the large number unforced net errors by their hitters.

The Braves were missing two of their usual starters - Angel LaShore & Amanda Terrones, who also comprise a large percentage of Lompoc's height. Lompoc Coach "Monie" Thomas summed it up this way - "They all played well, we just hit too many balls into the net."

Madison McNamee had 8 kills, Sydney Townes 12 digs, and Adri Villanueva 3 kills, for the victors. Brown also praised the "phenomenal setting" of Amanda Stanton.

The first set was all Cabrillo, the second set was mostly Lompoc, and the third set was a thriller. The Conqs led most of the early going, and had pushed the lead to four at 11-7, when Lompoc forced a side-out to halt a small run.. Thus the Braves were still in contact, barely, when Marena Lundy stepped  to the service line. The Team Captain, who "served really well, with lots of aces" throughout the match according to Coach Laura Shelvis, certainly did not disappoint in her final trip. She served seven conseccutive  points, with a few aces sprinkled in, to propell Lompoc to a 15-11 win in the set, and a match victory.
