Cabrillo 11, Morro Bay 8

Cabrillo  2, 4, 3, 2 - 11
Pirates    2, 1, 3, 2 - 8

It was physical. How physical ? One observer said "It looks like they came to play rugby." There were over a dozen exclusions and 2  penalties shots called, in what Cabrillo Head Coach Joel Jory would refer to as "just physical polo". Jory was more impressed with the way his team maintained their composure in the face of the pounding and were able to "grind it out" for the win against a good team. He was especially pleased with the the way "Nick (Matulis) stepped up".

Matulis scored twice in the 2nd period to help break open a game that was knotted at 2-2. He also scored consecutive goals in the 4th, after the Titans had trimmed the lead to just two. Eduardo Cardenas was again the workhorse for the Conqs - providing goals, defense, steals, and a lot of the composure that stood Cabrillo in good stead. The Pirates were kept in the game in certain stretches by an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Jack Krull.

Jim Waska, Morro Bay Head Coach, thought his squad played a "good physical game", although they struggled somewhat in the 2nd period. He lauded the unity of his outfit, saying "We bring everybody, and we use everybody. It was a full team effort." He also indicated that he thought Santa Ynez would win the contest next week with Cabrillo, leading to a rematch with the Conqs in the LPL semi-finals. In any event, he likes his teams chances - "We'll be ready for them next time."

Conqs: Eduardo Cardenas 5 goals, Nick Matulis 5 goals, Cannon Creese 1 goal.
Pirates: Marco Maffioli 3 goals, Connor Rose 2 goals, Grant Johnson 2 goals, Alexander McKee 1 goal. Jack Krull 15 saves.

It was another easy afternoon for a Cabrillo team that suddenly seems to be unstoppable. Head Coach MaryBeth Steiber has this group on a big time roll. The only question now is - "How far can they take this? ".

Kelsy Atkin, #1 singles, was apparently unhappy with giving up 3 games on Tuesday, because she only gave up 1 on Thursday. Playing three matches in 4 days this week, she has won 9 sets while out-scoring her opponents 54-4 in games. Three set sweeps were also recorded by Julie de Vonage (#3 singles), Audrianna LaPorte/Kayla Sandoval (#1 doubles), and Morgan Coffin/Alex Siefe (#2 doubles).

Both teams used several substitutes. Nipomo replaced their #3 singles player for rounds 2 & 3, their #1 singles player for round 3, and their #3 doubles for round 3. Cabrillo replaced their #2 singles, and #3 doubles in round 3.

Ho, Hum. It's the Pirates life for them. One does wonder if Templeton Head Coach Doug Hixon decided to take a page out of the Book of Ledgerwood. Marjie Ledgerwood that is. The Lompoc Coach used the Braves' match versus Santa Ynez to blow up her line-up and experiment. Comparing his line-up with Tuesday's contest against Cabrillo, Hixon kept his #1 & #2 singles players in position, moved freshman Ashley Barnes from #3 doubles to #3 singles, and brought 3 new doubles pairs.
