Cabrillo :     2, 1, 2, 2 - 7

The Pirates concluded a perfect 5-0 run through the LPL, securing the Regular Season title with a victory over the Conqs. The question is - "Can they do it again ?". Cabrillo, now 4-1 in the LPL, and Santa Ynez are highly likely to find themselves back in the same place next Thursday - in the Finals of the LPL Tournament. That tourney determines league placement for the playoffs, and will also decide who, if either, will get a Top 10 seed in CIF.

On Wednesday, it was the Pirates on top as the result of an offensive outburst in the later part of the 1st period. The initial 3 and a half minutes were scoreless, and it wasn't until the 3:23 mark that Antonio Barret was able to flick a Thomas Huddle pass into the Conq goal. Cabrillo got the equalizer a half minute later from Nick Matulis, but the Pirates dropped 3 on them in the span of a minute and a half. Eduardo Cardenas finally put the Conqs back in the scoring column with 0:24 remaining. Cabrillo never overcame that 2 point deficit, and it would get worse.

Santa Ynez dominated early due to crisp passing, efficient ball movement, and a stellar job in goal by Jordan Yarnell. Two of their first 3 goals were assisted, as was one of their 3 in the 2nd period. They also had a balanced offense - their 1st 4 goals were scored by 4 different players. They would also control the 2nd quarter.

The initial 4 minutes of 2nd stanza play were again barren of points, as both teams saw numerous shots saved or ricochet off posts or the crossbar. The Pirates again broke the drought, scoring 3 more times in the last 3 minutes. Cabrillo managed to collect another one from Matulis, but trailed 7-3 at halftime.

Apart from a fairly quick SY double skip goal 52 seconds in, both squads again took off the scoring caps for the first 4 minutes of the 3rd period. The Pirates, however, briefly put in their backup goalie, and he was abused twice by Eduardo Cardenas. The first time was relatively conventional, but the 2nd was an absolutely beautiful rainbow lob from outside as the 30 second clock expired. Cardenas followed up with a steal and 3/4 pool shot at the quarter buzzer that went just high. So, although the Pirates still led by 3 heading into the final period, the Conqs were starting to feel a comeback was possible.

Phillip Naughton got things started with another lob goal, against the starter this time, and Cabrillo trailed 8-6, with 5:41 remaining. Time out Santa Ynez. Less than a minute later, Matulis struck again, pulling the Conqs to with-in a single point. Plenty of time - 4:54 left. But, 30 seconds later, Santa Ynez drew an exclusion and called timeout. The resulting play ended with Frederickson netting his 2nd goal at 4:27, and while both squads had several good scoring opportunities, neither one did.

To be continued next week. The first round of Los Padres League Tournament play is on Tuesday, but both these teams have Byes.

Pirates (5-0 LPL, 17-7): Goals - Antonio Barret 2, Thomas Huddle 2, Greg Hatchell 2, Karl Frederickson 2, Eric Illes 1.

Junior Varsity
Santa Ynez 12, Cabrillo 9

Santa Ynez: 4, 3, 1, 1 - 9
Cabrillo :     2, 1, 2, 2 - 7

Pirates: Goals - Parker Maccanti 4, Tony Catarana 3, Jeff Bastanchury 2, Blane Hemming 1, #21 (If Not Also Catarana) 2.
Conqs: Goals - Saxon Morris 3, Ryan Marin 2, Riqui Cardenas 2, Zack Cole 1, Gerardo Diaz 1.

This contest was similar in several ways to the varsity game. Cabrillo fell behind early and never could catch up, even though they did tie it at 3 with 5:08 to play in the 2nd period. They even managed a lead of less than a minute, but the momentum never really seemed on their side and they finished the period down two. The Pirates outpaced them in the 3rd by 3 points, and Cabrillo never challenged again.

A night after the Pirates thumped the Braves, they were swept by the Royals. Karma ? Probably not. Ashley Carroll did become the the programs all-time dig leader, but that would not
