Conqs Win, Conqs Lose

Girls Golf

LPL Tournament #4

at Cypress Ridge Golf Course (Nipomo, CA) [Back 9 - Par 36]
(Santa Maria hosted)

The Cabrillo linksters hit a bump in the road, or perhaps I should say, a fairway bunker on their way to an LPL title. The Conqs led the Nipomo Titans by 2 points (23.5 to 21.5) heading into the tourney, but left it with that margin cut in half. Cabrillo has two more league tournaments remaining, including the finale at their home course in 2 weeks. The other, however, is next Thursday on the Titans track at Monarch Dunes. There are also two dual meets left for each team, the most significant one being next Tuesday when Cabrillo hosts the Titans at the Village Country Club.

Head Coach Dave Schroeder has been telling his girls all season that a few strokes here and there can make a big difference, and was vindicated in that belief on Thursday. The Conqs fell by a single stroke, 260-261. Jennifer Baltimore of Morro Bay solidified her grip on the LPL Individual Title by taking Medalist Honors with a round of 45. That race isn't over just yet, either. Santa Ynez's Jenny Andreas was a shot back - carding a 46. Also shooting 46 was Baltimore's teammate, Michele Cordova.

Lompoc shot one of their better rounds of the season, but the Santa Maria Saints top 3 players erased a combined 28 strokes from last weeks scores to pass them for 5th place.

Nipomo [260]: Ashley Ruiz 52, Courtney Cuzick 49, Erin Shusterich 58, Ashley Gonzales 49, Paige Johnson 52, Destiny Fryckman 60.

Cabrillo [261]: Roselei Redrick 53, Jacqueline McDonough 48, Karen Santamaria 49, Gaby Baumgardner 50, Christina Sawyer 62, Kelsie Merrick 61. Two JV players had competitive 9 hole scores - Devan McCune 60, and Aiden Badua 68.

Morro Bay [264]: Jennifer Baltimore 45, Michelle Cordova 46, Lily Keogh 48, Jamie James 61,
Aly. Garcia-Noriega 66, Alexis Garcia-Noriega 64.

Santa Ynez [282]: Jenny Andreas 46, Laura Fullmer 51, Molly Callaghan 54, Bryana Schuyler 65, Lauren Porcher 66 , Suvra Mostafa 67.

Santa Maria [291]: Angela Quintero 56, Selina Ybarra 49, Amee Cuenca 51, Diana Ordaz 68, April Gomez 67, Sabrina Arcos 69.

Lompoc [314]: Sarandon Vickery 52, Selena Krisher 62, Celeste Kamery 71, Moriah Decker 67, Kayla Doran 64, Nicole Flores 69.

The 'Black and Blue Battle' turned out to be a bit one-sided, as Cabrillo rolled early by grabbing a few points in singles and dominating doubles. The Conqs improved on their 11-7 victory the first time around this season, and there weren't many close matches along the way. There was one tiebreaker, and just two sets as close as 6-4.

The best, and longest, set of the day, was, of course, also one of the last to start. It featured Kelsey Atkin, Cabrillo's #1 singles player, and Lompoc's #3, freshman Erica Gracyk. Gracyk finally pulled out the win, for her second team point of the day. Each of the Lompoc singles players went 2-1, but the Braves were unable to take any doubles contests.

Cabrillo moves into sole posses ion of 2nd place in the LPL, while Lompoc remains in the hunt for a playoff spot. Lompoc subbed out their #1 doubles pair for the 3rd round.
