It was still 'Hot' on Tuesday, well, hot for here, and it had several effects on the local sports scene - from the 'wilting flowers' competing at the VCC, to the medical emergency at Lompoc HS. It did not seemingly have any direct connection, however, with the loss of electic power at Cabrillo HS - that apparently was the result of a student taking out a utility pole with a vehicle. It was quite a day in the valley ...

Cabrillo Head Coach Dave Schroeder usually has his cart loaded with goodies for the girls when the Conqs host a match - healthy/semi-healthy snacks (goldfish are a favorite) and water. Most often the snacks disappear rapidly, but Dave has to find someone to take the water at the end of the day. Not so today. Multiple coaches & carts were enlisted to relay water and ice around the course, after his generous supply was wiped out early in the round.
The oddest incident of the day, however, was the Rory McIlroy-like entrance of Cabrillo's Roselei Redrick. She was delayed getting to the course, not as some posited, by eating too much pizza at the NSBCART luncheon on Monday, but by the need to complete a Chemistry Lab assignment that could not be made up. Then there was the massive traffic jam outside the school, the road contruction on Burton Mesa Road, etc. . When she arrived, her group was walking from the 3rd tee to their shots. Fortunately for Roselei, that was their initial hole in the shotgun start. She sprinted to the tee, threw on some socks and her cleats, yanked a club from her bag, and without any warm-up at all, laced a long drive down the right side of the fairway. Had the group hit their second shots before she hit teed off, she would have had to take a double par for the hole.
As it was, she finished tied with teammate Karen Santamaria for second place with a score of 53. Medalist Honors went to Jacky McDonough, who has seen several players attempt to knock her out of the Conqs #1 spot. Tuesday, she was having none of it. Bolstered, perhaps, by a new bag name label she carded a 49. Her round included 4 pars, including a nice par putt on the 9th hole. Selina Ybarra's 59 led the Saints.
Both teams are at the 4th LPL Tournament on Thursday. It will be hosted by Santa Maria at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Lompoc Coach Jim Steffey decided to try something different. Instead of beginning the match with his usual bunch, he started a large group of reserves and then subbed in some of his 'starters', although not all at their usual places. The Saints took advantage of the opportunity with a 4-2 1st round, which included a singles sweep that featured two tiebreaker wins. The 'regulars' quickly restored order, however, out-pointing the visitors 10-2 in the final 2 rounds.

No one saw this one coming. Not Conq Coach Doug Meeder, who lost one of his top singles players to the varsity, and hoped his charges would be competitive, nor Pirate chief Steve Gunning who "never thought that my #1 doubles would lose three." "I've thought of a number of ways we might lose, but this sure wasn't one of them.", Gunning added as he and Meeder watched a final, crucial singles contest go to a tiebreaker. The Conqs needed to win the set for a 10-8 victory, since the Pirates would win if the teams tied. Cabrillo led the match 9-8 in sets, but was looking at a deficit of 3 in games. Unfortunately for the locals, it was not to be.

The Braves came out with some verve, but quickly fell into the Titans mode of play, dropping the initial pair of games in relatively easy fashion. Part of that pattern was to funnel the ball to Taylor Nevitt, a big, tall, strong, athletic Titan with a left arm capable of thunderous, crushing kills. For much of the match, the junior functioned as the visitors 'eraser' - whenever they got in a bind, she would pound one past, over, and occasionally through a defender. The Braves finally did play MUCH better defense in game 3, against the same group of girls that had them on the run earlier in the contest.
The most serious event of the evening was the need for medical personnel to be called for a woman who apparently collapsed due to the heat. She was transported to the hospital, but was reportedly in good condition.
Titans (4-1 LPL, 12-1): Taylor Nevitt 13 kills; Cristina Ozzimo 24 assists, 7 kills, 3 aces; Kiana Worth 7 kills; Sarah Stahl 23 digs.
Braves: Chyanne Thomas 7 kills, 4 aces; Heidi Chavez 14 assists; Brittany Bolusan 5 kills.
