Blow-out City

Contrary to public opinion, and the attitude of many fans, most coaches don't really enjoy blow-outs -even when they win. There are several reasons for this, one being that coaches understand that someday the wheel can turn and their team can take a beating, another is that many times the coaches are friends with each other. Other coaches are competitive creatures and really enjoy the concept of 'beating the best'. The primary reason I have found, however, is much more pragmatic.

Coaches work hard to get their teams to function at their peak, preparing them to perform with precision, accuracy, and efficiency. Then comes a blow-out and the rhythm, pace, and timing can all go kaput. Any coach with a modicum of sportsmanship will, of course, pull the starters, but this often results in sloppy play, the creation of bad habits, and, worst of all, injuries. It's sort of like a top-fuel dragster that receives a 'walk-over'. The focus and attention to detail can slip, and then a hose isn't connected properly, or the driver's shifting is off a bit off - and suddenly you have a vehicle fire, or an engine that's spewing parts. Thus many coaches reaction to a decided mis-match is simply relief that it is over. So it was on Wednesday ...

Girls Volleyball

at Cabrillo Gymnasium
Cabrillo 3, Santa Maria 0
[25-7, 25-9, 25-10]

The Conquistadors won in three straight and not very difficult sets. Cabrillo dominated early with Lauren Pluim pounding the Saints into the floor. The numerous substitutions then began. The entire Cabrillo bench saw considerable playing time, but what pleased Head Coach Jim Hilliard the most was that the subs "maintained the integrity of our game". It was a good team win and everyone stayed within the team's system - "they all played well". This was exemplified in particular by two bench refugees. Katie Middleton, a reserve rotation member, who did a bunch of good things on defense, and had a really good evening at the service line. And from way down at the end of the pine, Natalie Wilkie. She came into the front court and played smart, controlled system volleyball. She had 6 attacks, including 2 kills (one on a nice little tip to space) and didn't make mistakes.

Conquistadors: Brianna Farley 7 kills, Lauren Pluim 5 kills, Marissa Reyna 5 kills, Fallon Wynne 4 kills, Natalie Wilkie 2 kills, Samantha Munoz 3 aces.

Lower Division Matches
These really are often the better contests, the talent level usually being much more equal. They certainly have been the last two days.

Junior Varsity
Cabrillo 2, Santa Maria 0
[25-19, 28-26]

Technically, this one was straight sets, but it was very close to going to a 3rd game. In Game #2, the score was tied at 23,24,25, and 26, with each side having set points. Carley Chatterley finaly took control. The sophomore had a kill to even the game at 26, then twice served balls the Saints couldn't return to end it.

Coach Sydney Brown had particular praise for the all-around game of Amanda Staunton's, kill leader Madison McNamee, and the "Fantastic Job" done by Kinsley Edman in her 1st game as libero.

Freshmen
Cabrillo 2, Santa Maria 1
[17-25, 25-19, 15-13]

This one did go three games, after the Conqs dropped the 1st set, they fought back to win a thriller.

Boys Water Polo

After several days of the gals doing all the sporting work, the guys hit the pool.

at The City Of Lompoc Aquatic Center
Santa Ynez 19, Lompoc 2

Santa Ynez AD, Ken Fredrickson, had a choice. He could spend a large proportion of his afternoon in a hot stuffy meeting room, or he could watch his water polo team from poolside. Given that one of the leading polo players also is named Fredrickson, it was not likely a hard decision. It gave him an opportunity to watch a tremendous defensive effort - by the Pirate coaching staff. If Jake Kalkowski et al hadn't intervened, this one could have been much, much worse. While Lompoc played hard, and showed considerable improvement from last week, the young Braves (8 frosh) were clearly no match for a Santa Ynez squad that figures to vie with Cabrillo for the LPL title.

Half of the Pirates 16 member team scored in the first period, as they built a 13-1 advantage without missing a single shot. The visitors substituted freely, starting late in the 1st period, and the usual starting goaltender did not play. Four others saw time at the position, however - 3 of them for the first time. The Pirates went into slowdown mode midway through the second period, and only attempted two shots in the second half. Both were successfully taken in the 3rd period, one on a 5-meter penalty shot, and one by a goalie playing in the field. After the second of those two shots, Santa Ynez took a time out (at 3:44 3Q) and did not attempt another shot the rest of the game.

They did continue to play swarming defense, holding the Braves to only about 6 shots.

Pirates (2-0 LPL, 6-4): Goals - Sam Pappas 4, Eric Illes 3; 2 each - Antonio Barret, James Billington, Greg Hatchell; 1 each - John Lastra, Karl Fredrickson, Graham Mueller, Jon Jon Westwood, Sawyer Crosby, Thomas Huddle.

Braves (0-2, 0-3): Goals - Isaiah Gastinell 1, Harrison Brown 1.

at Nipomo

The Titans struck first, but the Conquistadors struck often - tallying 9 in a row for a 9-1 halftime margin.
