Their best shot at a league title? Definitely, Girls Golf. Football is a longshot. Boys XC is, as always, a possibility, and Water Polo depends on beating Santa Ynez (possibly twice). The poloists might just do that, but the Golf squad has a hammer-lock on the title.
It would require a complete meltdown by Dave Schroeder's crew next week to lose the crown. They lead the Nipomo Titans by 4 points heading into the final week of LPL contests. On Monday, Cabrillo plays Santa Ynez at the Alisal River Course for 2 points. If the Conqs win, at least a tie for the Championship is theirs. If they lose, something they haven't done in a dual match all season, it would still require the Titans to win their match on Monday (Santa Maria) and beat Cabrillo at the final LPL tourney on Thursday by 3 places. Cabrillo's worst LPL tournament finish so far was 2nd, by a single stroke. Oh, and the location of Thursday's Tournament? Well, that would be at the Village Country Club.

Jennifer Baltimore (Morro Bay) likely won the "Jennifer Battle" with Jenny Andreas of Santa Ynez for the LPL Individual Championship by taking Medalist Honors with a 4 over par 40. Andreas was 2nd, carding a 43, and Cabrillo's own Karen Santamaria shot a 45 for 3rd.
The news in the team competition was the 2nd place finish by the Pirates. Not the orange-wearing Santa Ynez Pirates as one might suspect, but the blue-clad freebooters from Morro Bay. The Pirates first 3 were 11 strokes better than the Conqs, but Cabrillo's superior depth won out. For the second time in 2 days, the Conquistadors discarded a score in the mid-50s - finishing 6 strokes ahead. Part of that depth was another "awesome" round by Gaby Baumgardner, whose 48 was only 2 strokes off her personal best set on Tuesday. Nipomo was without team leader Courtney Cuzick.
When asked about his squads' chances next week, Coach Schroeder replied - "Well, I don't think any of them watched the Ryder Cup, so we might have a shot." More likely, a half dozen fewer shots than their competition.

According to some, the definition of insanity is "repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results." Clearly, by that measure Lompoc Head Coach Marjie Ledgerwood is not insane. Some folks using other criteria might have looked at her line-up for this contest, and adjudged her to be so, however.
This, though, is not her 1st rodeo. The veteran coach of many sports used the occasion to partially rest some players nursing injuries, protect some of her young team from the ill effects (physical, emotional, and mental) of a Pirate pounding, give other players a shot at the court in a situation not very likely to be detrimental to the team, and generally shake thing up a bit. Her official, and laconic, explanation was " Ehh - thought I'd try a few things."
The result being that the squad on the courts represented quite a change from the usual Lompoc side. The Pirates, on the other hand, looked just like Santa Ynez always does - potential league champs.
So how jumbled up was the Braves line-up? All of the usual starters at singles played doubles. They were replaced by the junior partners from two of the usual doubles pairs, and an occasional reserve. All three singles players were then substituted for in the 3rd round by more reserves. The senior partners from the #1 & #2 doubles pairs joined as the new #1's, the #1 & #2 singles became the new #2 doubles, and the #3 singles player united with the senior partner of the #3 doubles. A half of the usual #1 doubles sat out. Got all that ?? Gooood.
The new singles players found out it isn't as easy as it looks. They dropped all nine sets by identical 6-0 scores. The doubles, at least, did provide some interesting moments. Erica Gracyk/Genesis Garza (the #3's) won 8 games and pushed their 2nd round opponents to an extra game. Emily Gracyk/Marielle Tabin (#2), playing together for the 1st time, also took 8 games, and even led briefly in round one. While Janett Ruiz/Colette Campitelli rallied in the final set of the match for a 6-4 victory - Lompoc's only point.

Torey Simms had another excellent afternoon - throwing for 2 TDs and scrambling for another. Javier de la Cueva handled the kicking chores, including a Field Goal, with aplomb. Isaac Jordan "ran hard", scoring a TD, and, according to Coach Paul Terrones "could have had a couple more". Terrones also cited the leadership and hard work of Darius Dunston, who stepped up to replace a linebacker who was out.
