Girls Tennis
The final round of LPL play wasn't going to alter any of the league placements as far as the team standings, but it gave several girls the chance to make their case about who gets to represent their team at the LPL Finals on Friday.at the Dave Bickmore Courts (LHS)
Lompoc 15 Templeton 3
The Braves jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back. The Eagles did have some opportunities late in the 3rd round, Lompoc leading 3 sets by 4-3 scores, with a fourth set closing from a 3-0 start to a 5-3 concern. Templeton couldn't quite halt the Brave momentum though, as Lompoc was able to close out all four.
The best contest of the day was, of course, the final one played. The sun disappeared behind the clouds hovering over the hills to the west, the breeze freshened and gained additional chill, and the upwind sprinklers came on. The tennis, however, was hot. Erica Gracyk, Lompoc #3, and Lauren Shinn, Templeton #1, played a dandy that finished in front of all the players, coaches, and spectators.
Shinn took game one, and they they split the next two. Gracyk then took 3 of the next 4 and led 4-3. Shinn tied it at 4 all. Gracyk won game 9 for a 5-4 advantage and a chance to serve out the match, but after several deuces, Shinn was able to break. She won that one and her own service game to go up 6-5. Gracyk used her serve to tie it at 6-6, and send the contest to a tiebreaker. Gracyk popped out to a quick 2 point margin, and while Shinn was able to cut the lead to a single point, she never could catch her. Erica Gracyk taking the set 7-6 [7-4].
That was one of 3 sweeps for the Braves. Marielle Tabin, and doubles duo Janett Ruiz/Collette Campitelli taking the other two. Neither side used subs.

[25-20, 25-12, 25-4]
On Senior Night, Lompoc played with the Pirates for a while, but they couldn't maintain the pace against the legions.
Game 1: Lompoc lost the first point and the Pirates seemed to shift into neutral. The Braves played volleyball - repeatedly digging and returning shots, and watching Santa Ynez makes errors. Lompoc established some minor leads (5-3, 7-4), but the Pirates knotted it up at 9 apiece. The teams exchanged points - tied again at ten.
A quick mini-run put Santa Ynez up 15-11 and the Braves called a time out. It was a good decision by Lompoc Head Coach Aaron Batula, even better was the play he called coming out of the timeout. That play resulted in a kill by Belgian exchange student Marine Dufresne which got the Braves jumpstarted again. They fought back, forcing ties at 16, 17, 18, & 19.
Coach Batula was looking for someone to take a photo of the scoreboard, and the Pirates awoke to the possibility that they might lose this game. At least, Kelly Krivulka did. She hammered 3 kills, the defense turned it up a notch or seven, and Santa Ynez took 6 of the final 7 points.
Games 2 and 3: The Parade of Pirates shifted into overdrive as Santa Ynez Head Coach Chip Fenenga accelerated the rate of substitution, making excellent use of the Pirates superior depth, and they cleaned up some of the hitting and service errors. They also started playing keep away from the Braves Libero, Rebecca Davis, who was described by Fenenga as "Excellent", and he asked his kids to find somewhere else to go with the ball. The uptick in serving quality was exemplified by Alexandra Carlson's 14 consecutive serves in Game 3. A run helped immeasurably by the hitting of the appropriately named Hayley Hamer and the ever present Krivulka.
Pirates : Kelly Krivulka 12 kills, 3 aces, 6 srvc. rcptns.; Megan Schumer 6 kills; Alexandra Carlson 5 digs, 4 aces, 14 consec. serves in 3rd set, 16 assists; Ashley Carroll 9 digs, 9 assists, 2 aces; Ariel Johnson 4 digs.
Braves (3-8 LPL, 3-16): Brittany Bolusan 3 kills, 2 blocks; Becca Davis 10 digs.

The Conquistadors certainly do seem to be peaking at the right time as the stun the Eagles who were previously undefeated in LPL play. Templeton had significant problems with service and hitting errors. They had 160 attacks with 42 kills, and 29 errors; 91 serves - 8 aces, 11 errors. The Eagles also had 10 ball handling, 15 digging, and 8 service reception errors. The Conquistadors outscored the Eagles 99-89 and Templeton had 73 errors. Bottom line is that Cabrillo forced a very good team into a lot of mistakes.
