Action All Over The Place [26 Sep 2013]

Thursday, 26 Sept 2013

It was a busy day. The only sport not in action was cross-country. Lompoc hosted the second LPL tourney at La Purisima, there were 4 water polo matches, 4 tennis matches, 3 lower-level football games, and also a little 3 match contretemps on Bryan Ayer Court between the Lompoc & Cabrillo volleyball squads.

But the best athletic action of the day may have been ...

Girls Golf

Los Padres League Tournament #2

It was just a tad bit windy out at the course today - if you consider a steady 25-30 mph with gusts over 35 to be a 'tad'. The girls also got to go from the easiest course on the circuit to the hardest. Consequently the scores were somewhat higher this week, but not as high as one might expect given the circumstances.

The Medalist for the Tournament Champion Nipomo Titans was Erin Shusterich, who shot a near miraculous 43. Roselei Redrick (44) & Baylee Gregory (47) for runner-up Cabrillo, were 2nd and 3rd, as the only other golfers below 50.

Team Scores:
Nipomo and Cabrillo swapped places at the top - everybody else finished in the same order as last week.

Nipomo 254, Cabrillo 263, Santa Ynez 292, Morro Bay 297, Lompoc 302, Santa Maria 344. Templeton does not field a team.

Points: With the win, Nipomo earned 6 points and Cabrillo secured 5 points. Both squads have 13 points - 11 points in tournaments, plus each has a 2 point dual victory.

Girls Volleyball

Cabrillo at Lompoc

Cabrillo 3, Lompoc 0
[25-21, 25-23, 25-14] (STORY)

The MUCH improved Lompoc varsity has done just about everything this season - except take advantage of opportunities to win.

One of Brave's Assistant Coach Monie Thomas' volleyball mantras is "Hit the ball in the court." Lompoc didn't do that nearly enough Thursday evening. They had 10 service errors, plus 'a bunch' of hitting errors. When they did get the ball in, the Conqs usually found a way to get it back up and over - including some that seemed to have devine intervention.

Another Outstanding Porformance by Kyler Heitman

Conquistadores [1-2 LPL]: Kyler Heitman 9 kills, 'several blocks'; Madison McNamee 25 serves, 6 aces; Carley Chatterley 40 digs/service receptions (2 errors). Sam Munoz 14 assists, 3 kills; Fallon Wynne 6 kills, 2-3 blocks; Katie Middleton 5 kills.

Braves [1-1LPL]: Chyanne Thomas 5 kills.

Upcoming: Cabrillo - Carpinteria Tournament (Sat), Host Templeton (Thur); Lompoc at Morro Bay (Tues).

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 2, Cabrillo 0
[25-19, 25-17]

Lompoc was able to fend off the Conqs through the middle of both games, holding on to 3-4 point margins and then stretching them out a bit at the end.

According to JV Head Coach Monie Thomas, the Braves success was due to "serving awesome" and "staying in the system" when things got tough.

Freshman
Lompoc 2, Cabrillo 1
[25-27, 25-7, 15-8]

The Braves staff thought that the girls played well and "Served really, really great." The exemplar for that was Adriana Mitchell.

The match hung in the balance in Game 3. An early 3 point margin had been erased when Cabrillo manage to side-out and Marissa Aqueda hit back-to-back aces to tie it at 6 all. There followed some mutual fumbling around and Lompoc got the serve back with the score even at 8-8.

Mitchell stepped to the line and served 7 in a row and the ball never came back over the net - 5 were touched by a Conq player only once.

Upcoming - Both Lompoc & Cabrillo at the Pioneer Valley Tourney (Sat).

After a turnover filled pair of periods, this game was tied 0-0 at halftime.
Yet somehow with 3:35 remaining in the 3rd it was 34- 7 Nipomo. The Titans were led by their tailback - #6 Michael Jordan. Yup, really.
