Girls Tennis

LHS #2 Singles Player Marielle Tabin

Coast Union vs Lompoc at the Dave Bickmore Courts (LHS)

Lompoc 18, Coast Union 0

Just another ho-hum shellacking by the Braves. Marielle Tabin continued her torrid run through the opposition posting a 6-0 record in sets (36-2 in games) over the last two days.  Despite rumors that she keeps winning because the other players are blinded by her footwear, it's more likely that it is her consistent, almost error-free performance that is making the difference. But it could be the shoes...

The Lompoc doubles have also performed well, A concern for Head Coach Marjorie Ledgerwood heading into the season, the re-built corps had 6 pairs competing for the 3 varsity spots, and all were fairly evenly matched. Sometimes that means you don't really have a standout, but in this case early results indicate they're all pretty good.

St Joseph vs Lompoc at La Purisma [Front 9]

St Joseph 279, Lompoc 309
It was a beautiful day on the tough La Purisima course, which made it marginally easier, but not enough to explain a remarkable Medalist performance by St Joseph senior Desiree Gillaspy to lead the Knights to victory.

A day after taking individual and team honors at the Pirate Invitational, Gillaspy had a day unlike many in recent history. She had a birdie on 3, a bogie on 6, a double on 8, and par-ed the other 6 holes, carding a 2 over par 38, four strokes off Justine Heath's course record.

The Braves Varsity dropped a heart-breaker on the road, while Atascadero thumped Cabrillo a few miles over.

Head Coach Aaron Batula noted Lompoc's problems with finishing teams - "We were serving for match point at 14-13 before giving up the last 3 points. We probably should have won in 3 straight sets but kids are still learning and trying to figure out how to play when they're in the lead. Still need to figure out how to get over that hump and get that victory."

Not a good night for the Conqs. They fell behind 7-1 in the 3rd set, battled back to 6-9, but the Hounds ran off to 20-11 lead, and coasted on in to the win when Cabrillo ended the match with a service error. Yeah, that kind of night.

Cabrillo 19, St Joseph 6  [Story]
[Cab 8,2,7,2 - 19  SJ 3,1,1,1 - 6]

Cabrillo Head Coach Jeff Dacus wasn't real happy about his team's defense in the opener against these same Knights last week (a 17-11) win. Nor was he exactly thrilled with their 1-3 performance in the Conejo Classic over the weekend. He seemed to be feeling better about his squad after a fair trouncing of St Joseph on Tuesday.

Conqs [3-3]: Goals- #12 Eduardo Cardenas 6, #4 Nick Matulis 5, #3 Noah Caro 3, #10 Ben Wulfstieg 3, #2 Phil Naughton 1, #7 Alex Hamner 1.

Knights : Goals - #8 Matthew Morales 2, #12 Walker Armstrong 2, #14 Leroy Coles 1, #7 Gian Spallino 1.

JV: St Joseph doesn't have a JV team, so Cabrillo held an intra-squad scrimmage that was called after 3 quarters with the score knotted at 7 all.

Paso Robles 10, Nipomo 8
Bearcats [3-1]: Goals - Daniel Maloney 4, Kohl Coffee 4, Isaiah Baker 2. Saves - Gabe Hingley 14.
