Everybody In Action - Almost [12 Sep 2013]

Thursday, September 12, 2013

There were 17 athletic events Thursday involving the two local high schools - Girls Tennis 4, Boys Water Polo 2, Girls Volleyball 6, Girls Golf 1, Football 4. That, of course, doesn't include action from other teams around the area, including the start of Los Padres League play in Girls Tennis.

In all those contests it would be difficult to find a more remarkable feat than Samantha Munoz's 18 consecutive serves to help get Cabrillo back in the match against a tough Paso Robles volleyball squad out at CHS.

Cabrillo's Eduardo Cardenas & Brett Gordon prepare for the 2nd  Qtr sprint.

Cabrillo 12 vs San Luis Obispo 5 at COLAC [V 2:40, JV 3:40]
[Cab 3,4,2,3-12  SLO 2,0,1,2-5]

Last weekend Nick Matulis was ill and could not play at the Conejo Classic Tournament in Thousand Oaks. Cabrillo went 1-3, finishing 11th out of 14 teams, including a 11-9 loss to these same Tigers.

On Thursday, San Luis was missing guys as well, the same 5 that were out at the Classic - with one addition. Starting GK Connor Troy had a severe nosebleed and had to be replaced by Ben Hurley.

Matulis back, opponents out, and the Conqs not happy about the weekend results meant that Cabrillo came out with an agrrr-essive attitude against the Tigers. Not just defensively either. The stifling defense was combined with an attacking onslaught on offense that had SLO Head Coach Randy Hower telling his team at the 1st quarter break - "Focus your defense everywhere."

[More To Come]

This one was not close. It was the Cabrillo JV's 1st actual game after having intra-squad scrimmages. Their "first time in the pool with people who know how to play" according to Coach Ryan Hill. They did improve during the course of the game and outscored the Tigers 3-1 in the 4th, but as Coach Hill told them after the game - "You gotta play like that the WHOLE game - All four quarters like the varsity did."

Conqs [0-1]
Goals - Michael Wulfstieg 2, Riqui Cardenas.
Saves - Sam Reep 7 (5 in 1st Q) [plus 3 off the cage]

Girls Volleyball

Paso Robles at Cabrillo

Paso Robles 3 at Cabrillo 2 [FR 4p, JV 5p, V 6p]
[22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 3-25, 15-7]

This was a fairly even match, but one with lots of streaks. After 3 games, the Bearcats had won just 5 more points than the Conqs, but led 2-1 in games. Game 4 was simply bizarre. Katie Middleton opened serving for Cabrillo and reeled off 3 strait points. Consecutive sides-out brought the serve back to Cabrillo and specifically to setter Samantha Munoz.

She went to the line and stayed there a while - serving 18 points in a row. She kept putting the ball inside the lines, got good support from her teammates, and a fair amount of support from Bearcats. At times, they seemed possessed by the spirit of the 'Keystone Kops' (Look 'em up) with the luck of Jackie Gleason's the 'Poor Soul' (Definitely look up). The was some back-and forth at the end, but Cabrillo cruised to the game 4 win.

Paso started out Game 5 the same way the Conqs had Game 4. Three quick points, and soon a 5-1 lead. But Cabrilllo crawled back into the contest eventually taking a 6-5 advantage. Paso tied it at 6 all, Cabrillo went back up a point, but Paso tied it at 7. The Bearcats won the next point to go up one, and Morgan Lawson went back to serve. She stayed there the rest of the match, serving the next 8 points and taking the match.

Football

Cabrillo vs Dos Pueblos (Goleta)

at Dos Pueblos 31, Cabrillo 21 [Story]

Cabrillo received scores from Steven French, Collin Babauta, and a Brett Gardner to Sabree Nixon pass to lead after three quarters 21-17. Unfortunately, the 4th quarter did not go so well. Following a Charger TD, the Conqs were marching downfield to regain the advantage when they fumbled away possession around the Dos Pueblos 30 yardline. They subsequently surrendered a long (c. 60 yard) run that set up the Chargers with a 1st & goal at the 9 yardline with about 2 minutes remaining on the clock. They would punch it in for a 31-21 final.
