Girls Volleyball

At the Lompoc/St.Joseph contest on Monday night there was a new addition to the scorers table adjacent to Bryan Ayer Court. A discrete photo of the 2010 Braves Varsity Team in a frame signed by all the players - including Wiyana Nelson who died in the Colorado floods last week.

St Joseph at Lompoc [Bryan Ayer Court]
St Joseph [1-3] 3, Lompoc [0-4] 2
[25-10, 16-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-10] [Story]

This was a very frustrating match for the Lompoc staff as another win came tantalizingly close, but slipped away.

In Game 1 Sara Chartier was subbed in to serve, and, girl, did she ever. Down 3-2, she served ten times in a row, starting with an ace. Finally, her arm no doubt tired, she hit one into the net. The damage was done, however, and the Braves never recovered as St Joseph was able to slowly expand the differential.

Game 2 was a fairly pedestrian stroll for Lompoc. The Braves essentially just outscored St Joe two points to one on each service opportunity (they sent 11 to the line). Lauren Powell (2) and Jenna Grossini had aces, and Chyanne Thomas (2), Nay Brown (2), and Arianna Espinosa had kills.

Game 3 was more of the same. Lompoc sent 14 to the service line, including a nice little serving streak from Brittany Bolusan that get the Braves up 6-3. Mostly Lompoc just put the ball in the court and let the Knights make mistakes. They had 9 winners, including 2 aces, but played really good defense.

Game 4. Twenty, count 'em, 20 ties. Eleven (11) lead changes. Whew !!
Aside from early Knight advantages of 4-2 & 5-3, no lead was as many as two points until a Chyanne Thomas kill put Lompoc up 16-14. The next 2 point margin would come on a Brittany Bolusan ace (22-20), followed by Chrissnay Brown kill for the initial 3 point lead in the game (23-20).

Then the game, and the match turned. Devon Beebe hit a 'tractor roller' over the net. The with Beebe serving and Emily Gantt pounding the ball on kills St Joseph surged to the lead 24-23. Lompoc regained the lead on a Grossini kill a Grossini block, but a net violation after a bad pass evened the score at 25.

With Gantt serving, Jetter won a dual at the net, Kolbo had a kill and suddenly the match was tied at 2 games apiece.

Game 5 [to 15]. There were ties at 1, 2, 3, and 5, before Lompoc pulled out to a 9-6 lead. Unfortunately, the Braves then had trouble finding the court with the ball. Helped by the errors, the Knights came back to even the score at 10.

Michaela Plummer stepped to the line and didn't leave until the match was over. A Lompoc kill attempt missed, another was blocked by Jetter, Sam Cooper surprised herself with a kill. Plummer followed those points with an ace, and a blast that the Braves couldn't handle. Game, match, over.

Tammy Hartman, St Joseph Head Coach, thought her entire team played well, and they did, although not consistently. Several different individuals, stepped up at various times, making big plays when they were needed.

The major offensive weapon throughout the match for St Joseph was Devon Beebe. It wasn't just kills, although she was in double digits for the match, it was her ability to hit the Knights back into system & restore confidence to the team. Other significant offensive production came from Emily Gantt (10 kills), Kelsey Kolbo, and Katie Jetter.

Braves : Chyanne Thomas 11 kills, 13 digs; Jenna Grossini 8 kills, 9 digs; Lexie Barbosa 24 assists; Chrissnay Brown 5 kills.

Junior Varsity
Lompoc 2, St Joseph 0
[25-22, 25-23]

Lompoc pushed out to an early advantage in Game 1, and while the Knights reeled them back, but could not reel them in. They went 3-1 to start, St Joe cut it to 5-3, the Braves went up 9-4, the Knights ran off 5 to tie it at 9 all.

Lompoc ran off 5 of their own, pushing the margin back to 5 (14-9), and the Braves maintained a 3-4 point differential until late. A Katelyn (??#8) kill and a block cut the score to 21-19 and led to a Lompoc timeout. The Braves obtained a sideout, but the Knights returned the favor (22-20).

Lompoc eased back out on a great Cheyenne Marmalejo return and an ace by Diana Herrera, but unforced errors allowed the Knights to stave off match point twice (24-22). The game ended on a whimper when St Joe's made an error of their own - a net serve.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth affair that made the first one seem like a runaway. There were 8 lead changes and 14 ties. When the Knights took an 18-16 lead it was the 5th time a team had lead by the biggest margin of the game - yup, two points.

An ace, and a kill shot into the net doubled the advantage to four (20-16). Lompoc fought their way back, eventually knotting it at 22 all. Jae Oliver got a kill for the lead and the serve, but the Braves gave up both on a net serve.

Lompoc won the following rally though, sending Ms. Oliver to the service line. She drilled the ball over the net, where it pin-balled off of two players and off the court. Point, game, match - Braves.

Freshman
Lompoc 2, St Joseph 0
[25-20, 25-19]

In Game 1 the Frosh were able to put on a late spurt, accelerating away from a 15-14 margin at a time out to waypoints at 20-16, and 22-17.

Game 2 saw the Braves use 6 straight serves by Tagi Taua (Yup, Taua) to open up a 12-6 lead. The Knight were able to close a bit, narrowing the margin to 20-16, but Lompoc would not be denied.
