Local Cross-Country & Locals Across Country













Vai Taua scored the first two TD's for the Nevada (Reno) Wolfpack, as they defeated the Idaho Vandals 49-14.


Local Cross- Country

Cabrillo
The Conquistadores won the small schools division at the Richard C. Brug Invitational in Atascadero Saturday. The three-mile course Santa Margarita Lake course features two big hills, somewhat reminiscent of the layout at Mt. SAC.

The next few meets for the Conquistadors is are the Clovis Invitational on Oct. 11th, the LPL All-Duals at Templeton on the 15th, and the Mt. SAC Invitational on Oct. 25th.

Lompoc
The Braves were slated to run in the Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach on Saturday, but the results of the meet do not show them as competitors.

AHC
The Bulldog harriers were at the SoCal Preview - Bakersfield Invitational
(10/3/08) held in, not surprisingly, Bakersfield. The Hancock women finished 22nd out of 29 teams in the 5K event, but, more importantly, one place ahead of SBCC. Ariana Fabing placed 63rd (79th- 21:16) to lead the 9-member team, Duania Evans 144th (180th-24:04), and Terri Ladja - no score (244th - 28:55), in the 260 woman field.

The guys finished 27th out of 36 in the mens 4-mile (345 runners). Cabrillo grads Oscar Torres (20:37) who both finished and placed 3rd, Miguel Ortiz (22:23) placed 87 with a 95 finish, and Nick Gilligan 223 / 188 (24:20) were the top three finishers for the Bulldogs.

Locals Across the Country

Vai Taua
Colin Kaepernick threw for two touchdowns and Vai Taua ran for three more, including the Wolfpack's first two scores, as Nevada beat Idaho 49-14 on Saturday. Nevada (3-2, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference) racked up 507 yards of total offense against the Vandals. Kaepernick went 19-of-24 for 243 yards with no interceptions. Taua had 94 yards on 21 carries, with a long of 13 and a 4.5 ypc average. [Story]

Boo Jackson
The Ohio football team couldn't capitalize on its opportunities to score early, as it fell to the Western Michigan Broncos 41-20 at Waldo Stadium Saturday afternoon on WMU's Homecoming. The Bobcats (1-5, 0-2 MAC) trailed just 11-7 at the half, but they couldn't keep pace with the Bronco offense in the second half. [Story]

Boo Jackson was 13-22-2 for 144 yards and 3 TD's, with a long completion of 41 yards. Carrying the ball he was 14-53 with a long of 21 yards, and was sacked 4 times. He lost 32 total yards, resulting in a 21 yard net and a 1.5 yard average.

Lydell Sargeant
The Penn State defense delivered another superb performance and to help lift the No. 6 Nittany Lions to a 20-6 win over Purdue in Ross-Ade Stadium. Sargeant entered the game as a backup and recorded a pass breakup.

Penn State improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten, while the Boilermakers fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Nittany Lions have won 37 of its last 46 games, the nation's sixth-best record over that span.

The Nittany Lions are 6-0 and will attempt to move to 7-0 next week. ESPN will nationally televise the Big Ten clash at Wisconsin on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT at Camp Randall Stadium.

Michael Slaughter #44 [LB] / Justice Clegg #71[OL]
The Peacocks of Upper Iowa University (1-5, 1-4 NSIC) hosted Wayne State (4-2, 3-2 NSIC) and fell 34-14 as the Wildcats racked up 401 offensive yards. No individual stats are available for either player.

Robert Sherman #82 [WR]
The Atherton based Menlo College Oaks dropped a 9-0 conference opener to the small college power Linfield (McMinnville, Ore.) Wildcats. Robert Sherman, a freshman wideout from Lompoc, who saw his first action of the season last week, did not play in this one.

Allan Hancock College
The Bulldogs have half a dozen Lompoc valley players on the squad which out-slugged Citrus 48-38 a week ago. Saturday, the Bulldogs played College of the Canyons, the Street & Smith Pre-season National #1 at Righetti HS, but the complete stats for that game are not yet posted. *** Update: The Bulldogs fell 42-21 to the Cougars. Both Scott and Ochoa had a tackle. ***

Against Citrus, sophomore #21 Tim Ochoa had an interception, his second of the season with returns of 26 & 76 yards. Ochoa & #3 Joseph Scott (who snagged a pick versus SBCC), are 2 of the 9 players for the AHC defense that had played in all four games. In those four games, Ochoa also has 14 tackles (9 solo), including 3 TFL (-20 yards) and two pass break-ups. Scott has 9 tackles (3 solo), 1 Tackle For Loss (5 yds) and a pass break-up.

Greg Watson (#27) has 2 tackles and two pass break-ups in three games. No Info so far on Casey Belluz (#40), Jake Farley (#61), or Joshua Blair (#97).

Soccer

Katie McIntosh #14

Chico St. [6-5-2, 2-3-2 in Conf] lost again on the road - 4-1 to Cal St LA. They are a nice 5-1-2 at home, but 1-4-0 away. The loss followed back-to-back wins, against Cal St Monterrey Bay (2-1) & Cal St Stanislaus (2-0), for the first time in a month. A starting Wildcat defender in all 13 games, senior Katie McIntosh has two assists on the season, but none since a 3-2 loss to St. Martins on September 4th.



Amanda Murray

The Cal St Dominguez Hills [8-5, 6-2 CCAA] womens soccer team followed a 2-0 win over Humbolt State on Friday with a 6-2 drubbing of #12th ranked Sonoma State on Sunday to vault themselves to first place in the CCAA South Division. It was their fifth cosecutive win. Amanda, a junior transfer has not played in the last several games.

Coming up - A Trip on Friday (10 Oct) to Chico State for the McIntosh / Murray Bowl

AHC - Men
The Allan Hancock College men's soccer team dropped their first Western State Conference game 7-2 to Glendale last Tuesday afternoon. Hancock (3-7, 0-1 WSC) had goals from Elifalet Garcia and Javier Renteria, but had no answer to the Vaqueros in the second half. The Bulldogs will host College of the Canyons on Friday, Oct. 3 at 4:00 p.m. Juan Benivides (LHS) and Massimo Beeson (CHS) play for the Bulldogs.

Softball

Courney Dosa #22
The recent Lompoc grad is the lone non-Missourrian on the Jefferson JC womens softball squad. Last year the Vikings were 35-15 (18-2 in conference). They were scheduled to begin play on August 30th, but no results are currrently available. Dosa is listed a Pitcher / Infielder.


Golf

Julia Heath

Cal-Poly will host eight men’s golf teams and six women’s squads at the inaugural Coast BMW-Coast Nissan Inter- collegiate on Monday and Tuesday at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo. Players will tee off Monday with split tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. (first round) and about noon (second round). The men will start at the 10th tee and the women at the first tee.

Cal Poly recently finished second for the second consecutive tournament. This time it was the Bulldog / Eagles Womans Invitational in Post Falls, Idaho. Julia carded a 76 in the final round to finish 4th overall (4 strokes back at 229), and lead the Mustangs.

Paddle Sports

Randi Edwards, a junior from Lompoc and AHC is competing in the Novice rowing division for Humbolt State.
Mao Vang, is on the Stanford Dragon Boat Team.

One New Cabrillo 'Alumnus'
Betty McCallum, CHS Principal for the last three years, will be 'graduating' to a new position - LUSD Director of Personnel Support Services. She will remain at Cabrillo until a new principal has been chosen by a selection comittee and approved by the District. [Her Announcement]
