Party At Paisola

The Coaches,Captains, and Refs meet before the match.

LPL Girls Volleyball

Cabrillo @ Lompoc

Varsity [Story]

Lompoc / Cabrillo has always been just a little bit different than most rivalries. Lompoc tends to view the Conquistadors as uppity younger siblings. You certaintly don't mind taking them out in the driveway and showing them who's boss, but you don't want anyone else doing it. Cabrillo, meanwhile, tends to regard Lompoc with a sense of bemusement at times, as if to ask "What's all the fuss".
The players grow up together, often play on club or youth teams together, attend the same churches, or have parents who work at the same place. The coaches are all part of the same fraternity (or sorority as the case may be), frequently having worked for or with each other over the years - often on junior teams with kids who go on to both schools. Many have been teachers at the "other" school. So is it really a rivalry ? You Betcha !! It's kind of like the 'friendly' card game at a family reunion, you don't necessarily have to win but you sure don't want to lose and hear about it forever.
So it was at Paisola on Thursday. Cabrillo Head V-ball coach Sue Slavins could give give appreciative Lompoc Headman Don Sevilla a great big hug before the Frosh contest, to congratulate him on breaking a long losing streak against Santa Maria, and then both go out a few hours later in fierce pursuit of conquest. Jessica Farley, Cabrillo's 'Hammer' in the middle, could wage a virtual war above the net with Lompoc's big gun Cameron Lizarraga, with other players sprawled on the floor or diving into the stands. Yup, it's a rivalry.

So how did the match go? Game 1 was competitive early, then Kaylee Long ran off 5 serves in a row and Cabrillo kept adding to their lead until they were up 21-14. At that point, Jackie Towsend stepped in and briefly took over. First with a kill for side out, followed by 6 consecutive serves, including several aces. Brandy Muchado helped out with a block and a kill, and suddenly it was a two point game (21-19). Cabrillo finally managed to side out, and served for another point before giving the ball back to the Braves at 23-20. Lompoc lost the next two points, however. Game 1 - Cabrillo.

Game 2 followed a very similar pattern. Kelly O'Connell's service helped Cabrillo to an early 5-1 lead. Tiffany Lee and Cloe Huggins served it to 14-7 mostly on the backs of stellar team passing & defense. Then that Townsend girl showed up again. Another six straight serves, including an ace, two Erica Slikker blocks, and a great Muchado tip in. Unfortunately, for the Braves, her serve at 12-14 was just long and Lompoc was nver able to regain any momentum and dropped Game 2 25-16.

The start of Game 3 was the Cameron Show. With Stephanie Olsen serving, Lizarraga had three big plays sandwhiched around an ace. A kill off Farley, a block of Farley, and a kill to the north-west corner. More Lompoc pyrotechnics and the Braves were up 10-2. Cabrillo did not wilt away. After a Farley block, and in between Lompoc mini-bursts, they started to chip a point here and a point there off the lead. Slowly, to 4-10, 6-12, 6-14, 9-15, Ashley Bonenfant served to 13-15, then back out to 14-17.
Callie Matulis stepped to the line, and with three serves (an ace and a Farley kill) tied it at 17 all. Then it was game on serious. 18-17 Lompoc, 18 all, 19-18 Cabrillo, 19 all. Two more leads and two more ties. Long had a massive kill for a 22-21 Cabrillo lead and a Lompoc lift gave them another point. After a Braves timeout, Lompoc induced a sideout (22-23), with guess who at the line. Yup. Townsend. But an extended rally resulted in a Megan Smith kill for Cabrillo, and Phoebe Huggins drilled one down on match point to win it. If Cabrillo volleyball keeps playing this well, several members of the water polo team may be showing up late.

Junior Varsity
Game 1 was a simple blowout, as Cabrillo cruised 25-12. Colby Edman had a 6 serve run for the Conqs, who dominated from the start. Alissa Lindemann had a short run for Lompoc.
Game 2 was not like game one. The Braves took a quick 4-1 lead. Cabrillo tied it at6-all on a Kiley-Shae Aldridge block, and began to ease out to a small advantage of their own. Two great Crystal Grover digs kept the Braves close. A Kady De Temple kill pushed the Conqs back ahead, but a service error and two Lindemann kills put Lompoc in the lead. A Cabrillo sideout and Caitlyn Harvey-Morgan served hit seven serves, five of which were aces. Game over ? Not quite. The Braves clawed back and tied it at 22, before a service error, a Jessica Rucinski ace, and a Felicia Bowen tip in ended the match.

Frosh
The lowest level started the evening with the closest match of the day. Stacy Harmon used 3 aces to stake Cabrillo to a 5-1 lead. Paige Maikrzek pushed it to 9-4, and the Conquistadors never really looked back, although Danielle Hamon had a couple points (2 aces) for the Braves to cut it to 12-18. Cabrillo's Harmon serving at 19-12 recieved two points off a massive kill and great defense to go along with 2 more aces to put the game out of reach.

Game 2 was an odd one. Cabrillo went up 3-0, then Lompoc tied them at 5-all. Neither team really established any rhythm, but Lompoc eased ahead by five points. Cabrillo never was able to get closer than 3 (at 21-18), and the Braves closed them out 25-20.

Tiebreaker - Game 3. Lompoc took the first three points. Cabrillo fought back to a tie at 6. The Braves regained the lead, by one, then two. Cabrillo tied them again, this time at 9-all. The Conqs Kayla Chard served two aces, before the teams exchanged service errors and suddenly it was 13-10 Cabrillo. Kaitlyn Ogan got the next two serves in play, and Cabrillo won both rallies for the game and the match.

Santa Maria 3 Templeton 2
The Saints electrified Wilson Gym by winning their first match of the year 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 16-14) over the Templeton Eagles. Nancy Cardenas served up 19 aces. Cristina Mora added 14 more to go with her 17 kills. And Gina Weatherhead had 8 aces, 7 blocks, and 5 kills.

Morro Bay 3 St Joseph 2
The Knights lost for one of the few times in recent memory within the friendy confines of Hofschute Gym. Dayna Drewniak had 27 kills, 22 digs, and 5 aces. Alexis Dudley added 40 digs, and Mariah Vail contributed 35 assists, but it wasn't enough. The Pirates (6-8, 4-3 LPL) prevailed 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13. In game 5, St Joe was down by 6 points and rallied - but came up just short. For the squad from the land of the Rock - Sara Hoversten led the offensive attack with 16 kills, Ciara Ramos had 11 kills and 8 blocks, Chelsea Mansfield kicked 9 kills and 6 aces into the pot, teammate Lorna Porter had 37 assists, and Cori Gacad tallied 38 digs.

San Marcos 3 Santa Ynez 0
The Div III Pirates stepped to face the Div I Royals and got stepped on : 25-18, 25-16, 25-18. Caitlyn Wright - 9 kills, Nicole Tomasini - 8 digs.

LPL Girls Tennis
Lompoc 10 @ Morro Bay 8
For Lompoc's varsity team (4-6, 2-6 LPL) it always seems to come down to the Braves' doubles prowess versus the oppositions singles strength. Well consider it to have happened again. The Braves doubles pairs, Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales, Elicity Fabing / Kaitlyn Munoz, and Nicole Nomany / Jessica Cosio, all swept their sets. The problem was the Morro Bay singles players, Kim Dauer and Megan Hansen, were also sweeping three sets each. The breakthrough came when Lompoc's Sameeha Husayn won the last set of the match 6-2.

Junior Varsity
Jim Steffey's LHS JV squad defeated the Pirates 14-4 the first time, but he was certain they would improve. They did. In addition he shuffled his line-up, because Korina Esqueda came back to him from varsity (not enough room in the van apparently). He installed Korina at #1 singles, moved Katelyn Lee from #3 to #2, pulled Serena Zuares from his #2 doubles team to play #3 singles, and combined #'s 1 & 2 singles players Gold Vang and Emily Tremblay at #2 doubles.

The Coach writes:

"The Girl’s JV Tennis Team dominated the Pirates from Morro Bay yesterday at the Dave Bickmore Courts.
In singles, Korina Esqueda swept her three opponents, dropping only two games the entire afternoon, winning 6 – 1, 6 – love, and 6 – 1. Serena Zuares also swept all three of her sets, winning 6 – 3, 6 – 4, and 6 – 2.
Continuing their dominating play was the doubles team of Azucena Villalobos and Ashley Branson who dropped only three games the entire afternoon, sweeping their three sets 6 – 2, 6 -1, and 6 -love. Also doing equally well, was the doubles team of Gold Vang and Emily Tremblay, who won their two sets 6 -3 and 6 – love, before giving way to the team of Miriam Lopez and Julie Abrego, who then promptly dumped the #3 team from Morro Bay, 6-love."
He continued " ...the doubles team of Rosa Carreno and Isabel Anguiano had an awsome day, starting the day off by shutting out their first round opponent 6 - 0. In the second round against Morro Bay's #1, they also prevailed 6 -2. In their third round match against Morro Bay's #3, that fought valiently, getting back into the match after being down to force a tie-breaker. Clearly exhausted after being on the court all afternoon, they just barely dropped the tie-breaker. They continue to excel and are doing very well, they were just a point away from sweeping a couple of times."

Katelyn Lee was competitive , but couldn't break through for a win, dropping two sets (4-6, 4-6). Jessica Smith played in the third set and fell (2-6). Coach Steffey intended to pull Vang & Emily after 1 set, but they asked to play another set against the Pirates #1's.

The next JV action is Tuesday @ Santa Ynez.

Cabrillo had the BYE.

Santa Ynez @ Santa Maria
The Pirates took over the Minami Center, blasting the Saints 18-0 despite extensive substitution. Lauren Gerlach didn't lose a game in her three sets, and doubles unit Katie Manser / Brittany Feighner only lost one in their three. Of the 7 games Santa Ynez gave up, 4 were to exchange student Astrid Schifflers in her loss (4-6) to sub Sydney Tack.

Cross Country
Quick Note: A decision from the LPL powers that be ruled that the Cabrillo boys had in fact won at the X-C All-Duals on Wednesday. Morro Bay was second, Santa Maria third, and Lompoc fourth. We are still awaiting full results.

Football Report Lite
for CIF-SS Week #6

Los Padres League

Pioneer Valley [5-0, 2-0 LPL] @ Cabrillo [2-3, 2-1 LPL]
The Conquistadors come off back-to-back wins against winless teams, while the Panthers roll into town with the best record in the county. Cabrillo is led by senior QB Sean Allen who is in charge of a ball-control offense. RB/LB Matt Rotondi is the hammer on both sides of the ball, and with RB Brandon Whittaker providing some zoom factor to the offense. The Conqs have won the last two games in fairly ugly fashion, but ugly wins are better than pretty losses, and Cabrillo will take any win they can get.

Pioneer relies on QB Nick Rucobo to hand the ball to Dan Ando or occasionally chuck it downfield to someone - usually Marcell Braddock. Sometimes, he'll even hand it off to Braddock or tote it himself.

Nipomo [1-4, 0-2 LPL] @ St Joseph [4-1, 3-0 LPL]
League leader St Joe can hurt you a number of different ways, but it all starts with the ball in the hands of QB Gavin Kelly. He'll either keep it, hand it to Ryan Anglin or KJ Cusack (among others) or throw it to Travis Biegel. They have outscored opponents 189-67, which could be a problem for the Titans who have been outscored 119-30.
Eric Penningroth has been the primary weapon for Nipomo, while QB Josh Corriea has spent most of his time running for his life.

Morro Bay [4-1, 2-0 LPL] @ Santa Ynez [0-5, 0-2 LPL]
The Pirates QB, Trevor Barkas, isn't asked to do much more than manage the game, which he does just fine. Morro Bay has been averaging over 300 yard per game rushing. Duran Gonzales and Wyatt Gerbracht do most of the damage, but you can't key on them because 3-4 other guys will then blow you up.
SY Pirate junior QB Tyler Shean has done some good things things since taking over, but has yet to jump-start a rather anemic offense. Morro Bay has 3-4 players capable of out-rushing SY in the Battle of the Pirates.

Santa Maria [0-5, 0-3 LPL] @ Templeton [1-4, 0-2 LPL] 7:30 PM
The Templeton High School varsity football team will be looking for its first league win at home on homecoming night. The Eagles lost their LPL opener to St. Joseph (Oct. 3), and fell 36-26 to Morro Bay (Oct. 10) after having 2 TD's called back due to penalties.
The Eagles have rushed for 993 yards - led by Kris Dearie [45- 412 , 3TD, long 65] and Garrett Baldwin [52- 338, 4TD]. Quarterback Kaleb Sawdey is 32-76-2 with 6 Td's. Dearie [9-163, 2TD's] is one of his favorite targets.
Defensively, Daniel Wheeler, Tyler Gray, and Derek Scoville have combined for 139 of the teams 377 tackles.
Santa Maria has been outscored 145-69, and was drubbed 42-0 last week by St Joseph. --- el stato
