Football Report
for CIF-SS Week #5
{See summary grids at bottom of post}

Cabrillo hosts Santa Ynez for Homecoming on Friday. As a major part of the weekend's celebrations are extensive plans to honor Everett Jones, the Conquistadores 1st, and arguably, most successful football coach 1965-74). Contact the CHS Athletic Dept. @ 742-2905, or Steve Beers (775) 230-6982 for more information.

This week the Pac-7, next week we add the LPL.

Pac-7 (with 6 teams ? Yup)
Most of the league took last week off to prepare for the start of Pac-7 play in the next few weeks. The league is currently 16-9 non-conference, including 6- 3 vs. the LPL, 5 - 2 vs. the Channel, and 5-5 against Northern Conference [NoC] (playoff bracket) opponents.

Last Week:

SLO @ Santa Barbara --lost 51-21.
Righetti vs. Dos Pueblos -- won 14-0

LOMPOC [4-0] @ SLO
The 4-0 Braves have once again been described as a "county powerhouse", and that was before their dismantling of the Dos Pueblos Chargers. They have now outscored opponents 121-24. After taking a Bye last week, Lompoc makes a trip to SLO-town on Friday to take on the Tigers. That happens to be a venue which has seen a lot of weird things happen to the Braves. Overtime, triple-overtime, fumbled interceptions returned for TD's, fluke injuries, etc. - and a usually pass-happy SLO team in a running league. In addition, the Tigers figure to be just a bit ticked about the drubbing they took from the SB Dons.

So how has Lompoc been doing it ?

Offensively the Braves have not yet really had a breakout game, although they have been much more consistent this year. They have run the ball almost exactly 75% of the time - averaging 4.87 ypc.

While Lompoc has relied on a diverse group of backs (11 have carries) to power their running game, Bobby Collins (68- 404 yds, 5.94 avg) has over half of their rushing yardage on 42% of the carries. Favi Vargas (39- 214, 5.49) and Scott Aguilar (19- 76, 4.00) also have double-digit attempts. They have also furnished the majority of receptions for the Braves. Aguailar [9-124 2TD, Collins 8-68 1TD, and Vargas 4-54. WR Rudy Yruegas has 5-87 and 2TD.

But the Braves 'secret weapon' so far has been the incrediblely efficient play of Richie Hirzel who is 15-19 (78.9%) with 4 TD's & no interceptions for 217 yards - a 154 QB rating. Ryan Bower in his first varsity action is 15-35-2 2TD's for 208 yards.

Their not-so-secret weapon is a so-far stifling defense that has only given up 24 points (6/ game) & 3 TD's. How good is 24 points ? Well, how about tied for 3rd in Southern Section with Long Beach Poly !! Wait, it gets even better, tied for 5th with Poly and Escondido in all of Southern California (Southern, LA, & SD Sections) !! That encompasses 89 leagues playing 11-man football (over 500 schools).

San Luis Obispo [2-2] hosts Lompoc
The Tigers have been alternating wins and losses, beating DP at home before hitting the road for three games. During that extended trip, SLO has sandwiched blowout losses to NoC teams around a 2 TD win over LPL foe Morro Bay. The most recent game, a 51- 21 thrashing by previously winless Santa Barbara Dons was a mess. They committed 3 turnovers in the first quarter - resulting in a 29-0 lead for the Dons. Santa Barbara QB John Uribe had a record setting night [28-34-1 for 581 yards and 7 TD's ]. The defense has now surrendered 113 points.

SLO's starting RB (#22) Jay McElearney [43-163 3.79 3TD] sustained a concussion in the Morro Bay game - his status for Friday is unkown. It is also irrelevent because his replacement Nate Nunno (also listed as #22 ) has been on fire. The 5-4 145lb scatback ran for 213 yards on only 25 carries (8.52 ave) in his first three games, and torched the Dons to the tune of 26 - 155 yds (5.96 per). Against Morro Bay, the Tigers scored 3 TD's on long drives [77, 82, 73] that were helped immeasurably by long Nunno runs [26, 43, 37].

But San Luis is a passing team, led by QB David Schultz. Until the SB fiasco were he was playing catch-up (15-26-2 192 yd 1TD) he had posted some truly ridiculous numbers -- 51-56-0 533 yds 4TD with a long of 31 yds and a 130 QB rating.

His targets are Alex Turbow (#1), a speedster of course, who has 17 receptions for 217 yards (long = 31) and a TD; "possession" receiver Justin Goodman (#17), 21-246 1TD; TE (#89) Max Duval 5-56 yds; and the RB's out of the backfield. McElearney 8-105 1TD, Nunno 2-35, and FB (#20) John Viggianelli 3-40 1TD have all been dangerous so far.

Paso Robles [3-1] @ El Diamante
The Bearcats took last week off, before traveling to Visalia to play El Diamante. After a zero week loss (39-14) to a now 2-2 Westlake team, PR has reeled off three wins. Blowouts of Fresno Central and Soquel (Santa Cruz Coast League), and a narrow (28-21) win over current LPL favorite St Joe.

Paso has a potent running game [150-894 11TD] led by senior mighty mite (#5) Andy Bridge. The 5-7, 200lb, Bridge has 504 yards on 79 carries and 7 TD's. Thomas (#8) Bernal [51-90-3, 677 yds, 4TD; 13-31-1 170 vs Westlake] heads the passing attack, but also is the 2nd leading rusher [38-199 3TD].

Atascadero [2-2] hosts Sanger
The Greyhounds are the Nick Tenhaeff and the Behemoths Show. The 6-2, 205, senior RB, who has already committed to San Diego St., has 85 carries for 575 yards and 8 TD's. Plus 83 yard & a TD on 5 catches. The behemoths ? Well start with senior Patrick Gibbons (6-3 276), junior Jeremy Loftus (6-2 307), senior Jake Mei (5-9 293), and keep going.
Trevor Holloway has added 105 yards (19 carries) rushing, and Alex Wolfe is the leading receiver [12- 195 2TD].

The defense is led by LB Nick Tenhaeff (he does keep popping up) with 31 tackles, and Trevor Hlloway with 27 more. P/K Nathan Stein is a weapon on special teams - 7 of his 10 kickoffs were touchbacks, and 6 0f his 9 punts traveled inside the 20. His longest punt this season in 59 yards.

Don't be fooled by that 2-2 record - those two losses came against St Bonaventure and Gilroy. The Seraphs are a perennial local powerhouse and defending State Champions, while the Mustangs simply ran out of time in the Central Coast Championship final last year. Clovis & Redwood are no pushovers, either.

Arroyo Grande [2-2] @ San Marcos
It looks like a rough year for the Eagles. That 2-2 record shouldn't be believed either, but for the opposite reasons. The two wins are a 21-14 win at home against Bishop Diego and a 23-13 defeat of Santa Maria on the road. The two losses were to Nipomo (24-0) and Pioneer Valley (23-6).

Kyle Kleinsmith [43-72-3, 357 yds, 1TD] took over the after QB duties Clark Goossen [22-24-0 157 iTD] was lost in the Nipomo game. Christian Crichton [58-340 1TD], Ryan Hickey (15 -69 1TD), and Goossen (21-69 ) are the leading rushers. Bo Cabalar has been a bright spot both receiving [21- 264 1Td] and rushing [6-34].

Righetti [2-3] has a BYE
The Warriors have been inconsitant this year. Playing always tough, but somewhat down this year Hart close (16-0), but losing in the opener to rival Pioneer Valley (29-17). The wins ? Cabrillo 35-28, Santa Barbara 35-30, Dos Pueblos 14-0 - all close.

Javon Davis [117-563 8TD] and T.J. Jordan [23-174 1TD] account for all but 10 of the Warriors rushing attempts. Junior QB Jordan is 60-108-6, 813 yds, 5 TD. Sam Halop [13-165 1TD], Matt Miller [11-184 2TD long-63], and Justin Rucker [16-230 1TD-long 43] lead the recieving corps.
