The LPL Pool Widens & Other Tales

Today's adventure takes us to many places around the central coast for a variety of activities-- attempting to soar with Eagles, clubbing Saints, jousting with Knights, and in search of Pirate treasure, but we begin in warm water ... the competition pool at the COLAC.

LPL Boys Water Polo

Lompoc was happy to host the first-year team from St. Joseph at the COLAC for a couple of reasons. After playing aquatic behemoths every week it's nice to play someone your own "size" and , perhaps, more importantly, the larger the league the more playoff berths given out by CIF. Last year the existence of a new Morro Bay team helped get Lompoc into the playoffs, with St. Joseph expanding the league again the Braves now have hopes of making regular trips.

The game itself was an interesting affair. Lompoc built a five goal (three by Daniel Dunaetz) first quarter advantage, were out-scored 5-4 in the 2nd & 3rd periods, and then stomped on the gas with five more in the fourth (including 2 more from Dunaetz) to win it 14-5.

Kyle Pickles opened the scoring with the first of his three goals, Dunaetz popped in his three, and Taylor Emory added one with 0:15 left to stake the Braves to the lead. Then it got a little hinkey, St. Joe's Jake Wemple & Vinnie Villapando scored consecutive goals to start the second. Dunaetz answered 10 seconds later and Carl Thacker hit one to equalize the period.

Villapando opened the second half scoring and had a 3rd period 'cap'-trick.
Unfortunately for the Knights, his goals were sandwiched around scores by Kyle Pickles and Alex Stone. In the fourth, Robert Macias scored twice, Pickles hit another one, and Daniel Dunaetz finished things off with his last two.

Kyle Pickles was the motor for this one -- 3 Goals, 4 Assists, 3 Steals, and drew several ejections. Daniel Dunaetz had the 5 Goals, 2 Assists, and also drew some ejections.

Junior Varsity
This was a real humdinger, since almost no-one in the poll was experienced. Three Brandon Bassett goals helped Lompoc open leads (3-1, 5-2, 6-3) several times early, but the Knights scored the last three of the second quarter and it was all tied up - 6-6 at halftime.

St. Joe scored first coming out of the break for a 7-6 advantage, but two Patrick Horenburger shots found net and the Braves pulled back into the lead. Bassett chipped in another one to make it 9-7, but the Knights scored on a 5-meter penalty shot and it was a 1 point game or tied the rest of the way.

Tied at 9-9 from the 3:54 mark of the 4th quarter, the tension was palpable as turnovers, missed shots, great blocks, and fouls followed each other in quick sucession. But the tie would remain until Carter Bovee hit a mid-range off-balance shot with 3 seconds left to win the game for the Braves.

Cabrillo
On Tuesday, the Morro Bay squad showed up at COLAC to take on the Conqs, but Cabrillo's schedule had that match-up slated for Wednesday because LHS had the pool, Tuesday, for the St. Joseph contest. On Wednesday, Morro Bay elected to not make the trip two days in a row, so the Conquistadors held an intra-squad games instead and lost a player to a back injury.

Cabrillo went 1-4 in competition at the San Luis Invitational at Shinsheimer Pool last week. The Conqs opened with a 1 point OT loss to Atascadero, and then were thumped by Woodbridge (c.14-4). Day 2 they rebounded with a 2 point win over Fresno (c. 9-7), but lost the followup game to San Marcos by 2 points. They concluded the tourney on day 3 with a loss to Nipomo by what was described as "a large margin".

LPL Girls Golf

On Monday the Cabrillo Conquistadors traveled to Morro Bay to battle the Pirates and the Lompoc Braves took the 101 to Arroyo Grande to test clubs with the Saints.

Cabrillo cruised past the Pirates 282 - 320 at the Morro Bay Country Club. The Medalist was the Conqs Fab Frosh Morgan Salm, who shot a 44. Morro Bay's Shanna Crawford (55), just nipped Jade Stevens' personal best 56 for second. Other scorers for Cabrillo were Team Captain Paige Hurlbut (57), Mariah Hall (58), and Gabby Hott (67).

Coach Gini Shekell and and four of the girls are now appearing on the Lompoc Locker Room TV show - air times are to the left, and down below the "heads".

Most of the inexperienced Lompoc squad got their first look at the Peter Jacobsen Signature Course at Cypress Ridge, where the Santa Maria Saints host events these days. In a barn-burner affair, Santa Maria's Jackie Teniente took Medalist honors, but the Braves took the match 333-336. Kaleigh Goethe (56) showed the way for Lompoc, but was ably supported by Julieta Solis (59), Jocelyn Caudillo (63), Brittany Kowelewski (75), and Ali Wilson (80).

Meanwhile St Joseph welcomed Santa Ynez to Rancho Maria Golf Course to try and settle the question of LPL golf supremacy--- and they tied --- again! After identical scores LPL Tournament scores of 245 at the VCC last Thursday, they both took off 15 strokes and tied at 230. The Knights Danielle Gilaspy (36) did take a step forward in her battle for the Individual title with SY's Maddison Shean and Kristen Henno. Those two have been contesting the Pirates #1 spot all season and on this day, of course, they tied - at 42.

Everybody is scheduled to meet for LPL Tourney #3, hosted by Lompoc at La Purisima on Thursday at 2 p.m. .

LPL Girls Tennis
The LPL concluded the first of two round-robin series on Tuesday.

Cabrillo
Varsity [4-1 LPL] Won 13-5
The Conquistadors rolled past the Morro Bay Pirates [3-4, 2-3 LPL] 13-5 powered by a doubles duos triple-sweep. Brissa Montes / Jessica Montes (all 6-0), Katy Carlson / Lanae Magers (6-0, 6-0, 6-1), and Elke Piertsegaele / Jocelyn Walton (all 6-0) each won all three of their sets. Only the Joyce Lo / Katie Lockwood combo were able to win a game.

The Pirates won 5-4 in singles, behind Kim Dauer's sweep (6-3, 6-3, 6-1) at #1. Julie Leyva won 2 of 3 (3-6, 7-5, 6-0), so did Ashley Pennewell (3-6, 6-4, 6-3). Nikki Piertsegaele was shut out but came close to swiping one 0-6, 4-6, 5-7).
Megan Hansen & Hannah Richardson had wins for the Bay.

Another lamb to the slaughter - Cabrillo JV #1, Andriana Siefe leads Morro Bay's Lily Quirk onto the Ryon Park courts on Tuesday. At this point, the Conqs were already up 12-0 in sets and 72-12 in games over a very inexperienced Pirate squad who were also without their regular coach.

JV [5-2, 4-1 LPL]
The Conquistadors had this match won before the end of the second round, coasting to an easy 18-0 win. Singles players Andriana Siefe, Ashley Bowman, and Breeanna Piper-Williams all won three sets, as did doubles units Kaitlyn Phillips / Lauren Daulton, Eisha Ayyar / Alena Tabor, and Kaylin Rentschler / Eloisa Castillo. Cabrillo only gave up 20 games- 5 in singles, 15 in doubles

Lompoc

Paty Martinez swept 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 and doubles pairs Dana Campitelli / Maria Morales and Kaitlyn Munoz / Elicity Fabing each won 2 of 3 - but it was not enough.

JV
The Braves were hammered by Templeton, falling 15-3 at the Bickmore Courts. Four Lompoc players were out-scored 54-12 in singles. Each doubles team managed to win at least one set, but it wasn't easy. Santa Ynez [9-0, 4-0 LPL] topped St Joseph 12-6, while the lost the singles 4-5 they dominated the doubles 8-1. Lauren Swift / Emily Ineman (6-2, 6-0, 6-2), and Erica Schroeder / Alisa Silsbee (6-1, 6-1, 6-3) each swept for the Pirates, but ironically the big news of the day came in singles. Pirate Nathalia Chaddad, a Brazilian foreign-exchange student, beat two-time defending LPL Individual Champion, senior Ane' McPike 6-2. It was McPike's first league loss since she was a freshman. Another of the Pirates foreign contingent, Louise Gyllerman (Sweden) beat the Knights #2 Frankie Eszes 7-5 while splitting two sets.

LPL Girls Volleyball

As the scores show the Conqs were in the match, they just couldn't get over the hump. Jessica Farley led the team with 12 kills, followed by Megan Smith (7) and Kaylee Long (6).

The Knights were led defensively, as usual, by Dayna Drewniak who had 18 digs. Alexia Dudley had 15 digs, including several crucial 3rd set saves. Offensive leaders were Lizzy Mitchell (8 kills) & Bri Foreman (5).
