Football: CIF Quarterfinal Results

Football

CIF-SS/Ford Football Championships presented by Farmers

at Culver City
Lompoc 49, Culver City 6
It was a JABBO. Just Another Braves Blow-Out on Helms Field at Culver City HS Friday night. The Centaurs made it mildly interesting for about half of the 1st Quarter. They had several big plays in the passing game, but couldn't make the 'BIG' play and actually stick it in the End Zone. Forswearing a pair of early opportunities to keep drives alive deep in Braves Territory, they kicked a pair of Field Goals, that would turn out to be their only tallies.

Brian Piemme covered the opening pootch kick at the Braves 40 yard line, and they quickly drove down the field. The drive stalled a bit, and after a measurement that determined them to be 2 chain links short of a 1st down, the Braves went for it on 4th down. Rafael Arrellano slipped on a muddy patch of field and ruled down. After another measurement, the ball was turned over to the Centaurs, who hit a 39 yard pass to Justin Montgomery as part of a 7 play drive that took them to the Lompoc 5 yard line. On 4th and 2 Anthony Caiseros kicked a 22 yard FG to give CC the lead. It would be brief.

Lompoc would have 9 more possessions the rest of the evening. Two would be used to run out the clock at the end of halves - the other 7 would result in TDs. The first would come just 2 plays, and 51 seconds, after the Centaur score, with Nikko Hayes breaking several tackles while rambling 53 yards. Another CC big pass play, 56 yards to Julius Wilson, soon had the them back in the red zone, but they settled for a 36 yard Caiseros FG. Three plays later Tyler Ornales hit Greg Mitchell down the west sideline for a beautiful 70 yard TD. Jose Morales hit the PAT, as he did all 7 times on Friday night.

On the Centaurs next possession, they ran 4 plays and punted, but Lompoc was called for a roughing the kicker penalty based on a performance by the kicker worthy of the Sony Studios located across town. Six plays later, aided by another 37 yard pass play to Wilson, CC would find itself with a 4th and 4 at the Braves 21 yard line. They attempted another FG, but this one sailed wide left.

Lavon Coleman got the Lompoc offense moving again with a 28 yard run followed in short order by a 19 yard TD cruise. A stiffening Braves defense forced a three-and-out, but it looked like Lompoc would also have to give the ball up, when they faked it. Taylor Cornejo took the fake and raced 28 yards to set the Braves up again. Nikko Hayes paid it off 5 plays later with a 1 yard plunge off the left side. The Braves then forced a punt and ran out the clock.

Another CC 3 & Out at the start of the 3rd period gave the ball back to Lompoc. Just 9 plays later Nikko Hayes was again celebrating in the EZ, after a 1 yard score. The Centaurs turned the ball over on downs following 4 plays of futility, and the Braves went 60 yards in 7 plays, including a 27 yard Ornelas/Cornejo/Arellano reverse. The final play was the second, and final, Ornelas pass of the night. This one also went for a TD as Ainuu Taua took a screen pass in the left flat and crushed Miriel Paschel who tried to stop him at the goal line.

Paschel received a small measure of revenge on the next series, taking a screen pass 45 yards to the Lompoc 35, and a 6 yard run to the 29 yard line. The next play, however, Johnathan Garrett made a tremendous play on the ball, and picked it in the SE corner of the end zone. The Braves took over at their own 20, and received a 1 yard run from Hays, 6 from Coleman, 13 from Cornejo, and 60 plus a TD from Austin Hayes. The Centaurs would pick up one 1st down on the subsequent drive before turning the ball back over to Lompoc. The Braves would run 6 plays and burn the last 5:11 off the clock which had been running since the TD Pass to Taua with 1:00 left in the 3rd period.

And then there were ...7. Only 9 area (Tri-County) squads entered the weekend still in contention, but the majority have advanced to the semifinals. Both losses came in the Western Division, where the Lompoc Braves rolled, but the Morro Bay Pirates and the Camarillo Scorpions fell hard to teams from the vaunted Mission League.
