Football: Round 1 Results

Lompoc 42, St. Francis 7
Although a number of 'nervous nellies' in the press box proclaimed variations of the "This is going to be a close game." theme, it wasn't. The Braves routed St. Francis, scoring enough points to win just on Taylor Cornejo returns. The offense, of course, did contribute some points of its own, namely 4TDs, but never really had to crank it into high gear.  Despite the wailing that they were allowing too many passes to be completed, and far too many 3rd down conversions (true), the defense gave up just seven points (a smidgen above its 6.8 ppg average).

Cornejo took the opening kickoff back 92 yards, and later retuned a pick 25 yards for another score. Lavon Coleman scored on runs of 5 and 46 yards. Nikko Hayes had a 55 yard jaunt to start the second half scoring, and Tyler Ornales hit Willie Iribarren for 5 yards and the 6th Braves TD on the night. Jose Morales hit all 6 PATs and punted well on the two occasions he was called upon.

Can the Braves play better? Absolutely. Did they produce a Championship caliber performance? Probably not. What it was was just another 'Ho-Hum' Lompoc blow-out. Well that, and win number 31 in a row. That   will do for now.

In other news, it was not a good Friday, for other area squads. The PAC-7 went 1-4, with the only win a shocker - Atascadero's upset of #1 Seed Palmdale. Neither AG nor SLO had their #1 QB's available for tonights games.
