2012 CIF Southern Section Divisional Prelims

(Mount SAC course, Walnut, CA)

Ten races were held in 5 size-based divisions on Saturday, 17 November 2012 to determine the teams and individuals moving on to the State Finals at Fresno's Woodward Park on the 24th. There were 16 teams and a few individual runners in each race. The Southern Section qualifies 7 of the 23 teams in each Division at State, plus up to 5 individuals. Individual qualifiers must be in the top 20 finishers, and not be on a team that qualified.

Sarah Baxter (Simi Valley) continued her assault on the record books by destroying the Mt.SAC rain course in a blistering 15:53 !!! That put her more than a minute and a half of the 2nd place girl in her Div. 1 race.

In the D2 Boys race, both Dos Pueblos (185) and Arroyo Grande (189) were nipped by Ayala (182) for 4th, but both qualified. Righetti finished 12th. DP's Bryan Fernandez won the race in 14:06. Trevor Cowan (23rd) led the Eagles with a 14:38, while Alec Deleon (43rd) paced the Warriors at 14:53.

DP junior Addi Zerenner finished 3rd in the D2 Girls contest. Arroyo Grande sophomore Jocelyn Reynolds, finished 39th in 17:30. While no LPL Teams moved on, two individuals, league Champ Jacob Carey (Santa Ynez) and Austin Lay (Morro Bay) managed to qualify. Nick Murillo (20th D5) of Orcutt Academy and Charlotte Monke (19th D5) of Cate nearly squeaked in, finishing in the top 20, but were not in the top 5 individuals.

Beth Rigali (9th, 17: 48) led the St. Joseph girls to a 6th place finish and a spot in the State competition. Eli Malfo (40th,16:02) was the highest finisher for the St. Joseph boys.

PAC-7 schools in Divs 2 & 3. The Channel League is predominately in Divs 1 & 2. Almost all of the small/private schools from the area are in Divs 4 & 5.
