Lydell Sargeant
According to the NFL, if you're an executive looking for a cornerback in the upcoming draft - don't look at Cabrillo graduate Lydell Sargeant.
Despite starting at the position the last two years for a pretty good Penn St. defense, and seldom seeing the ball thrown to his side of the field due to his coverage, the NFL has apparently decided that in order for Lydell to move forward - he must go backwards. At the recent NFL Combine he worked out at Wide Receiver.
Although he did occasionally line-up outside during his time on the hill, and even played the position a bit when he first arrived at Happy Valley, he spent most of his high school playing time at running back and corner. He moved to corner at Penn St. as a sopomore after very limited recieving duty his first year.
Sargeant, listed at 5'-9", 190 lbs, is one of the smallest of the reciever candidates. Oregon St.'s Sammie Stroughter (5-9, 189), Quan Cosby (5-9, 196) from Texas, and Arizona's Mike Thomas (5-8, 195) are the others. Cal-Poly wideout Ramses Barden (6-6, 229) is the tallest.
At the Combine Lydell had the 2nd fastest [Brian Hartline Ohio St.] 60-yard shuttle time (11.22) among recievers, and the 6th fastest overall.
A Cabrillo Returnee
Some 30 years ago Cabrillo student Lori Klitz was playing tennis on the courts at the south end of the campus. After graduation, she married an LHS grad by the name of Steve Hollister. It is not known if they had to leave the area because of this 'mixed marriage', but she does occasionally like to return to the area.
"I like to see the school and go by my old house" she said on her latest trip. The visit was somewhat less appreciated by the CHS boys tennis team because Lori Hollister is the head coach of the Arroyo Grande Eagles squad that dominated them on those same, but refurbished, courts on Thursday.
The match was never in doubt but it did finish in fine fashion - a final set dandy between Cabrillo's #3 doubles tandem of David Terrones / Jeff Rodriguez and Eagles subs Kenji McKistry / Bernd Kostman (an exchange student from Austria). A back and forth tie-breaker affair, it was eventually won 7-6 (8-6) by the visitors.
At least there was enough light left for the coach to show some of her old stompimg ground to the Eagles #2 singles player - senior Nick Hollister.
