Cabrillo Diamonds & Diamone

Cabrillo JV softball pitcher Nathalia Powell poses with battery mate Beth Radabaugh after striking out 22 in double header action on Saturday.

It was a good day, and a good day to play two, for the Conqs on campus. The varsity & JV softball squads both swept Nipomo, both baseball teams split with San Marcos, and across the parking lot the both the Dodgers and the Angels were winners in VHLL Major League games.

The Cabrillo Varsity maintained their undefeated status on Saturday by sweeping a double-header against the Nipomo Titans. Kiley Shae Aldridge collected the win with a complete game, 7 strike-out, 1 walk, no-hit, seven inning shutout.

Amanda Leake went the distance in the second, a five inning 'mercy-rule' game. She had 6 K's and no walks in the one-hitter. After as scoreless first two innings, the Conqs busted loose for 6 in the third, 1 in the 4th, and 3 more in the fifth. The offense was helped immeasurably by Adriana Segura's 3-4, 4 RBI effort, which included a two-run triple.

Nathalia Powell threw both games in the Nipomo double-header. In the opener she had 14 strike-outs, and only 1 walk in the complete game shutout. Cami Files had a homer in the second, and the team drew "lots of walks" according to Coach Abiyari.

In Game 2, Powell gave up 1 hit (a triple), walked 1, and recorded 8 strike-outs. Ashala Martin scored three runs, and the Titans again helped out with several walks as Cabrillo pushed across 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to win via 'mercy rule' 11-1.

Up 9-1, with Crystal Lopez on 1st and nobody out, Ashala Martin slapped a single through the infield -1st & 2nd, still nobody out. Powell drilled a corkscrew grounder that the second-baseman couldn't handle - bases loaded, no outs. Beth Radabaugh's single to right brought 1 run home, and left runners on the corners, with, you guessed it, Nooo-body out. Kayla Silver entered to pinch run for Radabaugh, and watched as Brittany Kelly lifted one deep. After the catch, Silver lit out for second, drawing an off-the-mark throw and allowing Powell to score from third. Up 10, bottom of the fifth - GAME.

The Conquistadors came out strong in game 1, but had their late comeback fall just short in the afternoon effort.

In the opener, the Royals started quickly, with 2 runs in the first, then added 1 in the 3rd and 2 more each in the 4th & 6th, but Cabrillo came on even stronger - posting 13 runs in the initial 3 periods (6, 1, 6) and cruising to the win.

Thomas White got the win for his 5 run, 6 inning outing, with Patrick Somers allowing the last 2 in the seventh. Six players had at least 2 hits, and Somers, Kevin Harmon, and Chuck Mertz all doubled. David Fraats launched a two-run homer in the third.

Game 2 saw Cabrillo nursing a 2-1 lead through five; the locals had scored one in the 1st and each team scored a run in the fifth. Starter Niko Schafnitz turned the mound over to Sean Greathead in the top of the sixth, and the Royals found his offerings more to their liking - the Conq defense also took a (temporary) powder, they would commit 3 errors in the game, and the visitors were suddenly up 6-2.

They were not done, however, putting together a 7th inning comeback that fell just short. In what Coach Jon Osborne called a "testament to their fight" the team put 3 hits and some San Marcos miscues together for three runs in bottom of the seventh, with the final out barely recorded at first as the tying run came home.

Down a run, two out, and the speedy Greathead on second base, the Conqs big guy, Brian Engler, strolled to the plate. Despite some early strikes, he worked the count to even at 2-2, then watched ball 3 collect enough dirt low and away to allow Greathead to steal third. So two out, tying run at third, full count. Engler laced one that was barely knocked down. Greathead sprinting for the plate was not going to be caught, so the throw went to first base for the force. It was in the dirt, and behind the bag with Engler pounding down the line. Did the first baseman dig it out ? In Time ? That's what the Ump said he did, but there was a whole lot of dust in the air.

Greathead took the loss, and Zach Pecyna led the offense, going 1-3(double), 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Cabrillo fell to 5-3 on the season after their second 1-run loss.

Buck Sharp's charges endured two losses in the first game of the two-fer on Saturday. One was their initial game loss on the season, and the other was the services of starting pitcher Kyle Shroll. Shroll, a P/ 3B who was part of the regular three man rotation on the mound, sustained an injury and had to be lifted in the fourth inning.

Luke Dellazanna finished game 1, then started game 2- throwing 3 innings, before giving way to regular closer Henry Fienga who went three more.

Leading 3-1, the Conqs put the game away with 3 runs in the fourth (Nathan Reed hit a two-run triple, then scored on Jesus Barraza's single), and Fienga getting out of trouble in the fifth. A single, a steal, and two more singles resulted in 1 run scored (making it 7-2) and runners at 1st and 2nd.

A fly ball to right field moved the runners up a base, and a hit batsman loaded 'em up with one out. Fienga then struck out the next batter looking and, after the count went 2-2, blowing strike three past another to end the inning.

Cabrillo worked 2 walks, a passed ball, and a grounder to second base into a run in the bottom of the fifth, and Fienga used two more lookie-loo strike-outs and a weak pop-fly to short to end the game.

The game was called at the conclusion of the top of the 6th due to the time limitations and impending darkness.

Track / Field

The Cabrillo T/F squad sent a contingent down to the Camarillo Classic on Friday & Saturday. Most of the results were firmly middle-of-the-pack, but there were a few bright spots. Competition was held in 4 divisions - Varsity and Frosh / Soph for both Boys and Girls.

The boys varsity Distance Medley Relay [DMR] (200, 400, 800, 1600) took first, and the Fr/So DMR was second. The biggest news for the girls varsity was the return to action of seniors Shyrissa "Pinky" Dobbins and Diamone Mitchell. Neither was at mid-season form, but both are expected to make significant contributions ere long.

The girls frosh/ soph unit made some noise by winning the 4 x 1600 Relay, finishing 3rd in the DMR, while sophomore Stephanie Arcilla was second in the Discus & tenth in the Shot Put.
