Saturday's Results [Sunday Update]

Three for the price of one. Saturday at Cabrillo HS, the baseball alumni game on the left, and two CHS Varsity Tournament games on the right.

Results from the Cabrillo Varsity Softball Tournament, the Arroyo Grande Dive Invitational, Lompoc Baseball, Lompoc Softball, and more ! Still waiting on word about Cabrillo at the Paso Robles Relays.

Also check out Brad Memberto's spring training opener - an interview with Cabrillo's Danny Duffy [Story]

Swim/ Dive

The Cabrillo dive team members headed up Hwy 1 to AG to compete in the AG Invite. Since it's a young & inexperienced group they all competed in the 6 dive event instead of the longer 11 dive event. They may be green, but they are not small - Cabrillo accounted for 11 of the 28 competitors (boys - 2 of 8, girls - 9 of 20).

Ashley Pennewell (CHS) ran away with the girls contest. Although her score [154.6] was down from the Righetti dual meet total she posted on Friday [192.25], it was because she attempted much more difficult dives in AG. Chelsea Hathaway [127.80] narrowly edged Conq Sara Studer [125.70] for second.

The other Cabrillo girls -

5th: Erin Cloffin - 119.45
10th: Qwan Hayes - 111.25
11th: Cyphanie Sherman - 110.55
14th: Victoria Yeats - 99.7
15th: Sarah Heath - 86.65
17th: Jasmine Pierce - 83.75
18th: Alley Miles - 78.55

Cabrillo's Kyle Brock finished in first ahead of Brayden Clarke for the boys title.

Softball

Cabrillo Varsity Tournament
Top Bracket
Game #1: Cabrillo 16, Bishop Diego 0
The Conqs easily trounced a Cardinal team depleated by injuries and other problems. The BD pitcher was making her first ever appearance in the circle. Cabrillo got a 2 run homer from Gabi Palacios, a triple from Alex Pino, and doubles from Kelcie Jo Pecyna (2), Shelby Kuhlman, and Adriana Segura. Story

Game #2: Santa Barbara 8, Santa Maria 1
Regardless of the outcome, the Saints biggest loss came before the weekend, when pitching ace Deja Camacho injured her knee in one of the teams first scrimmages. Freshman Michaela Rucobo went 5 innings, and Sam Serna pitched the sixth. Rae Marruffo doubled and scored the run.

Game #3: Cabrillo 11, Santa Barbara 1
The barrage continued - led by Pecyna with a double and a triple.

Game #4: Santa Maria 13, Bishop Diego 3
Saints Head Coach Mia Iteralde was much more pleased with the offensive consistency and aggressiveness in game 2. Sam Serna gave up 3 runs in 6 innings and hit a double. Rae Marrufo went 4-5 at the plate.

Bottom Bracket
Game #5: Nipomo 6, Carpenteria 3

Game #6: Hueneme 4, Santa Ynez 1
Too many mistakes and not enough hitting. Adriana Garza was tapped for three runs (1 earned) in her four innings; Sam Kelly gave up one unearned run in her three innings of relief. The Pirates manufactured their lone run in the fourth.

Game #7: Nipomo 6, Hueneme 4 [8 Innings]
Tied up at 4 at the end of regulation, the Titans score 2 in the top of the 8th.
Game #8: Carpenteria 2, Santa Ynez 1
The Pirates couldn't buy a break. After frosh pitcher Hannah Snyder was victimized for runs in the 2nd & 6th, both abetted by errors, Santa Ynez had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom half of the sixth. Katie Manzer drilled a grounder down the third base line which hit the bag and bounded out of bounds. Should be at least tied - right ?

Well, two runners had crossed the plate and a third was chugging for home, when it was communicated to everybody that the plate umpire had called time out. What ???? Turns out she was screened on the play by the runner at third, and thought that it was a foul ball. Because she called time (the softball equivalent of the NFL's inadvertent whistle), the play was dead at that point and all runners returned to their bases.

Manzer fouled off a number of pitches before drawing a walk to force in a run, but that was followed by two infield pop-ups, and (ironically) a routine grounder to third. Neither team could do anything in the seventh, and it ended 2-1.

ROUND 3 Games [Sat, 14 March - starting at 9 am]
Some intriguing match-ups -

Top Bracket
Game #9: Santa Maria / Santa Ynez
Game #10: Carpenteria / Bishop Diego

Bottom Bracket
Game #13: Cabrillo / Hueneme
Game #14: Nipomo / Santa Barbara

Lompoc

Suzanne Manlet [Simi Valley] Tournament
The Braves varsity were scheduled to play two games on Saturday.

Lompoc 7, Palmdale 0
The Braves scored 4 in the first, 3 in the second, and coasted to the win in this 5 inning game. Lompoc had 9 hits, and drew 3 free passes (vs 2 strike-outs) from Falcon pitcher Jessica Saldana, but also benefited from 4 errors committed by the defense. Brave pitching allowed 6 hits and 1 walk, but struck out seven.

Simi Valley 5, Lompoc 0
Pitcher Amanda Olizeto threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts (2 walks) in the game - unfortunately she plays for Simi Valley. Olizeto threw 80 pitches to 18 batters in 5 innings. The result was a 5-0 win over Lompoc. Amber Olive went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Taylor Cartwright went 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

The JV are at the Nipomo Tourney.

Baseball

Cabrillo
A good-sized crowd and a large number of ball-players turned out for the Patrick Ostini Memorial Alumni Game at Don McIntyre Field. Everybody had a great time, there was a fair amount of "trash talking" - mostly from the alumni about their fellow teammates, and the winner was .... the Cabrillo sports program due to the receipts from the snackbar. Oh, you meant the score of the game ? Wait, I think someone was keeping track of that.... Yeah- Brad says it was 8-6 Varsity, I think.

Alumni Participants {included}

Bubba Jones (2005), Richie Moreno (2007), Tommie Hawk (2003), Buddy Hain (2003), Ernie Martin (1971), Meade Hernandez (2000), Mike Aldridge (2005), Ryan Aldridge (2007), Tyson Ramsden (2008), Pat Kiesing (1995), Derek McLeod (2005), Chris White (2005), Mark Murray (2002) [whose proud mama Sheryl, CHS Activities Director & game announcer, ragged on his arm behind the plate all day], Buzz Austin (2003), Aaron Thiele (2007), David Sharp (2003), Chris Thiele (2005), Thomas Woodard (2003) [whose show-stopper homer to straight center field was a highlight], Erick Klinedienst (2001), David Fundingslund (2006), Jacob Ramsey (2007), and Alex Brill (2007). [Yes, I know I'm missing some].

Lompoc
The Braves won both games of a double-header at Channel Islands on Saturday. In the opener, starting pitcher Cody Berryman gave up 3 hits and a run in seven strong innings, allowing just one walk & striking out six. He also helped himself at the plate, going 2-3 with a double, and both scored and drove in a run. Lompoc had 3 doubles, 6 RBI, and had seven different players score in the 7-1 victory. Daniel Dunaetz closed in fine fashion - allowing one hit while striking out two in two innings. Stats

So, how do you follow a blowout ? How about with a bigger blowout ? Exactly what the Braves did - downing the Raiders 9-1. Stats Apparently, if you let them pitch - they play well. Ryan Bower took the mound and delivered a 7 inning, complete game. He gave up 1 run and 3 hits, while fanning 13 and walking none. In addition, he went 2-2, with a double and RBI, and stole a base. Lompoc had 9 runs on 9 hits, 8 RBI, and 4 doubles.

Combined output: 16 runs, 20 hits, 14 RBI, 7 Doubles, 5 stolen bases, and only 5 strikeouts. 1st game - avg. .367 /slg .467 , 2nd game - avg .290 / slg .419 .
