Lompoc Tennis, LPL Honors (Part 1), etc.

Joel Martin, playing #3 singles for the Braves, waits for the ball to drop - in or out ?

Will the last one out of Dave Bickmore Courts, please close & lock the gates ?

Loretta Jensen's guys are in the middle of a hectic week. The schedule originally had Dunn School coming to town last week, with Coast Union arriving on Tuesday. The CU match was an error on the program, and wind, rain, and the Flu postponed the Dunn match-up to Wednesday this week.

The group was rather surprised then on Tuesday, when the Pioneer Valley team showed up claiming that they were scheduled to play. Sure enough, it was on the Panthers schedule. So Coach Jensen transformed the planned afternoon practice into gameday. The match started about half an hour 'late', but was completed satisfactorily - a 13-5 Lompoc win. They followed that up with an 11-7 victory over the Dunn Earwigs, with Dave Bickmore, long-time LHS coach and teacher in attendance.

The real problem for the Braves is the fact that they open league play against defending LPL Champs, and perennial powerhouse, Santa Ynez on Thursday with a varsity squad is vanishing at a rate that would astonish even Alfred Hitchcock.

Even before the start of the season, the roster had already taken a hit - #1 singles player Alex Jensen had back surgery and is on limited duty (some doubles action). Several more players had to take a seat over the last week for various reasons, and two JV players were called up Wednesday. The plan was to have them on the sidelines as substitutes, but as it turned out both had to be used and Lompoc still forfeited a third round match becase of injury.

Losses prior to the match against Dunn the losses had scrambled the line-up, with long time doubles players like Joel Martin and Kyle Thumm having to step in at singles in the last few matches. Neither had played match singles in quite some time - "years, probably" according to Martin.

On Wednesday, the doubles took some hits as well. Jesus Abrego suffered an elbow injury in the first round, and Kyle Thumm, who was playing with Alex Jensen while his usual partner, Joel Martin, was at #3 Singles, re-aggravated an injury, and had to be replaced for the 3rd round.

After that set began, Cooper Barrick, a doubles player the last few seasons, but at #1 singles on Wednesday, finished his 2nd round set and reported that he was experiencing problems from a back injury he sustained on Tuesday. The team was forced to forfeit his 3rd round set because no one else was available.

The Braves still pulled out the victory - based on a 5-1 1st round. They swept the doubles competition, but only won 2 of 7 singles matches. Singles, of course, being where Santa Ynez is the strongest this year. So the questions are -1) "Who does Lompoc get to play singles on Thursday ?", 2)"Can they win enough in doubles to offset the expected problems in singles and keep the match competitive ?", 3) "Can they get everybody back to the school from the 'South Pacific' rehearsal in time ?", and 4)"Will having Dave Bickmore stop by his namesake help them any ?". --- el stato
