Boys Golf & the LPL Week #1 Recap

Abie Luna (center) who was the Medalist, watches as LHS coach Chris Adams totals up the scores after the match. The Lompoc Braves hosted the Pioneer Valley Panthers at La Purisima on Monday.

The sun was shining brightly. A few clouds dotted the sky. Birds were singing, and the recent rain had caused the pastoral landscape at La Purisima GC to burst forth in all its verdant glory. It was in short - horrible.

Like winter pictures featuring wondrous mounds of fresh fluffy snow, the picture is much better than the reality. The problem was that a fiercely cold wind was blowing , and the famed "La Piranha" came out to play. The course, which proudly advertises itself as the '33 toughest' in the country and has humbled PGA hopefuls, certainly lived up to that billing today.

The victims Monday were not seasoned professionals, but the boys teams from Lompoc and Pioneer Valley. Pioneer's third year coach, Rob Mouw, making his first visit to the course seemed slightly stunned by the 'survivor golf' that was transpiring before his eyes.

In the end it was the Braves that navigated the 18 holes with the least damage, winning the match 519-545.

Individual Scores:
The Braves Abie Luna posted a near miraculous 91 to take Medalist honors, while his teammate Brian Magann was 2nd (94). Steven Boyd scored a 97 to lead PV and take third. They were the only three to card rounds under triple digits.
