Thursday Results - with just a bit of controversy !!

BASEBALL

At Lompoc
Lompoc [5-1] 14, Nipomo [3-1] 3 [Story] [Stats]
Ryan Bower only allowed 3 hits - while the Braves scored more than that many runs in an inning - twice. After an eight run first inning, they added another four in the fourth. Bower went 5 innings, gave up 3 runs (2 earned), and had a 8-4 strike-out to walk advantage. Reliever Daniel Dunaetz cleaned up the last two with no runs, no hits, 4 K's, and 2 walks.

Even though they had help (7 walks, 1 batter HBP), the bats certainly showed up in this one. At least 8 Braves had a notable day at the plate.

Hirzel: 1-3, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored
Bower: 2-2, 2 RBI
Tatigue: 2-3, 2 RBI, run scored
Aguailar: 3-3, 1 RBI
Aguilar: RBI, 2 runs scored, 2 walks
Mallory: 2-2, RBI
Sapp: 1-1, double, RBI, run scored
Berryman: 2-2, double, RBI, 2 runs scored

For the Titans, Ryan McNeil went 1 for 3 (double, 2 RBI), but also took the loss on the mound. Sean Perskey was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Freshmen: St Joseph 3, Lompoc 2
The Braves utilised a "team effort" to surrender a three run lead to the Knights, but fought back in the bottom of the seventh. They had pushed a run across to cut the margin to one, and had the bases loaded with one out. The batter then clipped a high fastball into the air - unfortunately, high into the air just in front of home plate. Even more unfortunately, the Ump didn't call the infield fly rule into effect, forcing the runner at third into movement.

The catcher dropped the fly ball about three feet up the third base line, and about two feet inside the line. The ball rolled into foul territory, and the runner came home. The reciever attepted to tag the runner - then threw to first, where the batter beat the throw. Coach Rubio, coaching at third, pointed at the runner who had crossed the plate and said to the Ump, "He's safe - right !". The Arbiter replied - "Yes". Game tied, bases loaded - right ?

Nope. The St. Joe coach came boiling out out onto the field, as his kids were trying to involve the runner who had already crossed the plate in a 'pickle', protesting a) that the IF rule required the batter to be called out, and b) that the runner at home had been tagged out. Eventual result ? The runner was called out at home (out #2), due to a mystery tag, the runner at first was safe, the next batter grounded out, and the Knights won 3-2. Maybe someone wanted to go home and check their brackets in the NCAA tourney.

Several spectators/parents were quite upset, and did not behave with the greatest decorum. Too bad really, the kids just want to play ball - and the alledged 'grown-ups' mess things up.

The game itself was pretty good, lefty Lucas Martin started on the hill, and Keldon Marmalejo threw the last 2 innings. Marmalejo also singled, so did Virlin Donelson (plus 2 walks), and Toby Contreras had a double. The squad had two batters reach base after being hit by pitches.

At Cabrillo
Cabrillo [4-2] 5, Atascadero [0-4] 3
Two out, bottom of the fourth, Sean Greathead at the plate with runners on - and, he comes through with a three-run triple. Greathead was 2-for-3 on Thursday, and Conq starter 'Big' Brian Engler (1-2) went six innings striking out five and surrendering five hits. Thomas White picked up his first save by working the seventh.

At Santa Ynez
Santa Ynez [7-1] 4, San Luis Obispo [3-1] 3
Home runs by Ty Silacci and Scott Shields were not enough for SLO, neither was outhitting Santa Ynez 8-5.

Two innings in, the Pirates were up 4-0, then held off the charging Tigers for the win. In the four-run second inning, Zach DeMarcus doubled to score run number three, then Nicho Delavalle singled to bring in DeMarcus with run #4.

The Tigers got three runs back in the fourth inning off starter Todd Whitmore, whom coach Dave Kuehn had originally planned to have only go 2-3 innings as a tuneup for the league contests next week. In the fateful fourth, there were those homers back-to-back followed by a single. Tyler Lowry then took the mound and shut down SLO the rest of the way. Evan Soliman helped keep the Pirates in the game by blocking several wild pitches and picking off a runner in the sixth.

At Morro Bay
Paso Robles [2-2] 6, Morro Bay [3-3] 1
A Zach Jones four-hitter, combined with Austin Swank's offensive output (3- 3, double) did in the "other" Pirates. The Baysters did get one extra-base hit - a Tyler Lee double.

At Templeton
Arroyo Grande [3-1] 14, @ Templeton [0-5] 1
Already up 5-0, Kyle Raubinger's double started an Arroyo Grande eruption for seven runs in the fourth inning, as they cruised to a 14-1 victory. The Eagles from the south (AG) outhit Templeton 14-2, while the northern Eagles (Templeton), made things even easier for the visitors by committing six errors.

Arroyo Grande catcher Seth Spears (3-3, all doubles, 2 RBI) led the team offensively, and Eric Simon (2-3 3 RBI) also made significant contributions.

Three AG pitchers - Kyle Pearson, Forrest Pankey and Eric Simon combined on a two-hitter. Kyle Peterson collected the win, and Pankey relieved him in the fifth inning.

Templeton's Ricky Hun took the loss, Dan Wheeler hit smacked a triple, and Brendan Pinkerton hit safely in his only at-bat.

SOFTBALL

At Cabrillo
Cabrillo [7-0] 3, Righetti [2-5] 0
Amanda Leake three-hit the Warriors en route to a complete game shutout. Cabrillo only had five hits themselves - but one of them was Adrianna Segura's two-run homer. Alexa Garcia went five innings for Righetti, before Hayley Davis took over in the circle, and struck out five.

At St. Joseph (St. Louis de Montfort)
Game 1: St. Joseph [4-3] 8, Paso Robles [5-4] 1;
Kailey Snyder pitched a five-hit complete game, the Bearcats had seven errors, and the Knights blew this one open with a six run sixth inning.
Alexa Sanders doubled and Caitlyn Voss tripled.

Game 2: St. Joseph [5-3] 5, Paso Robles [5-5] 3
The Bearcats played better in this one - committing only two errors, but so did Alexa Sanders. She doubled twice, and Caitlin Voss doubled for St. Joseph.
