In the Islands & Around the League

Joel Smith (right) of Lompoc receiving accolades with some of his teammates.

Chaminade University completed its fifth consecutive winning mens basketball season with a record of 15-12 (7-5 Pac-West Conference). Sandwiched around a really nice middle, were an atrocious start (1-6) and 3 game slide going into the finale. Silverswords senior Joel Smith [LHS], a 6-4, 210 lb. guard, was not going to let that streak be extended into his last collegiate game.

After early losses to North Carolina, Alabama, and Indiana, the big problem the Silverswords had, was dealing two local opponents - BYU-Hawaii and UH-Hilo. They never did solve Conference champ BYU, losing all four times they played, but they had one victory over Hilo. They had split two games in February, a 2 point loss and a 13 point win, but took the McCabe Gym floor against the Vulcans harboring memories of a 98-82 shellacking at the same location just four days earlier.

Joel Smith was not going to lose - he unleashed a barrage of 'threes' and scored a game high 32 points (second to his season & team high 32 points) in the 68-63 win. His seven 3-pointers were more than the team had in 10 of its 27 games. The win secured a tie with Hilo (15-12, 7-5) for 3rd place in the Conference race. For his performance he was named to the PAC - West Conference Weekly Honor Roll -- again. During the season he was named to the Honor Roll 5 times and Player of the week once.

As evidenced by the honors, his contributions to the team, were not a one shot deal. He started 26 of the 27 games at guard, and finished first on the team in Field Goal Attempts, Field Goals Made, 3 Point Goal Attempts, 3 Point Goals Made, Points, Point Average, Steals, Free Throws Made, and Blocked Shots. He was second in Rebounds, Defensive Rebounds, and Minutes, and third in Offensive Rebounds and Assists.

He led the team in scoring 7 times (including 2 of the 3 times a player scored over 30 pts. in a game), rebounding 4 times, assists 5 times, steals 10 times, and an astounding 9 times led the team in blocked shots --- as A GUARD.
